    In this discussion area, please feel free to share your experience in implementing A.B.A. programs in the school system. We would particularly like to hear from those parents who converted their school teams to A.B.A. We’d like to hear the nightmares as well as the success stories.

    Any insight that can be shared by school-based special education assistants to help parents would also be very meaningful.

    My daughter is going to kindergarten next year. I'd appreciate any advise on finding a good school. We live around the Lougheed mall area, and we are looking in both Burnaby and Coquitlam area.

    Thanks,
    Christine

    This is posted on behalf of a FEATBC parent member:

    In regards to Alexei's question-
    You might use this web-site to get your starting info on advocacy: http://www.bccpac.bc.ca/publications/resources2.htm#1 There is an excellent brochure called "Speaking up!" which is a parent guide to advocating for students in public schools.

    If you look at http://www.knowyourrights.ca/knowyourrights/guardians_special_ed.html you can see there are three different levels of bureaucracy who manage Special Education:

    – the Ministry of Education, including the Ministry's Special Education Branch ( read the most important facts from their Manual of Policies, Procedures and Guidelines at http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/specialed/ppandg/toc.htm );

    – your locally elected school board and senior school district management officials;

    – your child's Principal and the school based team.

    Don't forget to write to your MLA and keep him/her updated about your child's situation.

    Sorry, forgot to mention – we are in Burnaby School District.

    Hi everyone,

    I wonder if somebody who had an experience successsfully dealing with school system can show me the right direction?

    My son has Autism, he turns 7 in January, has been in ABA therapy for 4 years and recently started going to kindergarten with an aide. The problem is that school is ignoring any advice from our consultant and trying to make our aide to run programs/interventions that just don't work for him and also conflict with ones we have in our home-based program, so that the kindergarten program was nothing but a source of stress for everyone.

    I am having a meeting with school principal and the resource teacher this Wednesday, but I am unfamiliar with the school system and don't know what I can and what I cannot ask them to do. I will very much appreciate if somebody who has been through this before shared their experience and advice.

    My email is wirth64@hotmail.com.
