KeymasterIn this discussion area, please feel free to share your experience in implementing A.B.A. programs in the school system. We would particularly like to hear from those parents who converted their school teams to A.B.A. We’d like to hear the nightmares as well as the success stories.
Any insight that can be shared by school-based special education assistants to help parents would also be very meaningful.

MemberSo heres the skinny,
As you all know my guy goes to a religious independent school in Vancouver. One of the classes of course is religion.
This day in religion class there was an exercise where you have to write a comment on a sheet of paper with a classmates name written in the middle.
So just to be clear, the name of the kid is in the middle of the sheet of paper, and then the sheet is passed around the room and each kid makes a comment about the person who's name it is on the paper.
Enough logistics.
This us some sense of what his peers think about him. Of course there are no negative comments, because that's kind of frowned upon.
If you look at the sheets, there are a lot of, "you're a cool guy", "you are nice"………
We came upon this comment.
Now remember these are 15 year olds, not the most sensitive souls on the planet
This is the comment that was made about Mr. P
"All the times I've felt singled out in the hall ways thank you for always saying Hi"
Take that to your integration specialist……

ParticipantDear Susanna,
All of us feel overwhelmed at the beginning, but those who do not give up are richly rewarded, in ways you may never have imagined.
Yes, running an ABA program is an extreme challenge. Because of the difficulty involved, the experience builds character and brings out the best in you. I have seen ordinary people turn into extraordinary parents, ones that have inspired me to sacrifice anything and everything for my child.
Yes, there are very few qualified professionals available. That is because the forces of evil have convinced the ignorant masses that such professionals are not important. That is where FEAT BC comes in. In the heroic struggle against the wicked, parents have shown extraordinary leadership, and have earned my deepest admiration.
God is giving you an opportunity to learn how to fight heroically and love unconditionally. It is your choice whether or not to accept it.
Tony
p.s. There are many of us who can help you find a consultant and get started. Let's talk.

I welcome any comments but please do not forward my emails to anyone. Please let me know if you need to forward it to assist you in more info. I am completely open minded to sharing emails but the courtesy of a "heads up" or "I'd like to pass on your email" always appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to reply. After all, a reply is still a good thing.
Thank you Bill and Cheryl Jensen for your email. I appreciate your honesty.
Thx

Memberhello FEATers,
does anyone know how long it takes to set up an ABA plan with consultant (how many appts)? I have two B.I.s waiting in the wing and will be ready in January to start. I hope there are some concrete and resourceful info you may include to guide rookies into this all too confusing situation.
Thx.

MemberHi Debra,
thx soooo much for your support because it means so much. even if one person supports my earlier post than it is enough for me. I am fortunate my comments were made "safely" because I feared this would happen (shared with the consultant). But I also agree that if the professional is good then they will also understand the need for us to check everything and everyONE our children work with.I am honestly giving up and don't think I want to persue ABA only. This consultant and interventionist is too complicated. And the waiting list is like forever. I know if they are good you have to wait but government has made the funds available but not the people with the skills set to go with it. Therapy for a better future of our kids should not be hard.
I thought being misdiagnosed by FHAN was bad. What a waste of my time first accepting the fact there was something not "normal" and then having to turn around and prove that he is autistic and wave my hands in the air to get that aknowledged. It has been a long 3.5 yr journey to get here and only more disappointment. I am disgusted at the fact that there are more children than consultants available.
I suppose I should realize if my chidren were in Asia they would receive NO help and probably thrown into the looney bin (psychiatric ward). At least we try to be more humane over here in North America or so we try.

MemberI must agree with Susanna. It is sad because, as parents, we should be supporting eachother. Some consultants are just not a fit with all families and you should be able to speak freely about your particular experience.
Sadly, this is not always the case.
You best bet is sometimes just a "no comment" or "this particular professional was not a fit with our family".
(I don't mind saying that I have the most fabulous consultant in the world right now….yes it's true!!!)
My advice: you should never regret being completely honest with what was YOUR OWN experience, but try also to be kind…..sometimes a little difficult, I know….November 29, 2007 at 4:07 am #3354Deleted User
MemberTRUDY AND ALL PARENTS OUT THERE
PLEASE BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WHEN YOU GET A RESPONSE TO YOUR PRIVATE EMAIL BY ANOTHER PERSON ON THE FEAT CHATBOARD.
I POSTED A SIMILIAR AD ONLY TO HAVE IT BACKFIRE. MY EMAIL WAS SENT TO THE PERSON I INQUIRED ABOUT AND I AM VERY UPSET. IT SHOULD BE CONFIDENTIAL REGARDLESS AND THE PERSON THAT DID THAT DID NOT HAVE A RIGHT TO EMAIL OR FORWARD MY COMMENTS TO ANYONE WITHOUT MY PERMISSION.JUST A HEADS UP
