In this discussion area, please feel free to share your experience in implementing A.B.A. programs in the school system. We would particularly like to hear from those parents who converted their school teams to A.B.A. We’d like to hear the nightmares as well as the success stories.

Any insight that can be shared by school-based special education assistants to help parents would also be very meaningful.

    Everyone,
Does anyone have info on how the Hewko case is applicable to Burnaby School District? In other words how does it apply to us. I have read some of the highlights of the case but I thought it was in Abbotsford???
I mean was there a "ruling" that the Hewko case is now directly applicable and related to the school districts in ALL of Lower Mainland or it is rather a guideline for us to "negotiate" with our school? Thx.

    Hi Everyone,

My son will start Kindergarden this fall so it's time for us to start thinking of what schools he will go to.

Has anyone had any expericense with Kindergarden/Elementary schools in Vancouver (Kingsway and Joyce)?

Any comments would be appreciated, whether good or bad?

Please send your comments to soktekcheng@telus.net

    Thanks,

    Rina

    Posting for another Parent….

SEA-Autism URGENTLY required for Langley School District.

Certification as SEA would help, but is not the most important criteria. Experience in ABA and the ability to assist with high school curriculum are the most important qualities for the candidate. You would be assisting a high functioning, happy and humorous young man. He has no challenging behaviors to deal with. Your focus would be on assisting with school work, communication and socialization.

If you have ABA experience and can cope with high school curriculum and have been thinking of moving into the schools to work as an SEA-Autism, please reply in confidence to aba35team@gmail.com.

    Thank you.

    Hello everyone,
Is there anyway we can find out the policy for public school (elementary) for autism funding?
What I mean is my son was diagnosed on the spectrum this past July. But thing is he was "sharing" an assistant's time last year by being in the same class because he has no "label". Now it seems that he is officially designated with Category G for ASD he has been reduced to 2 hours of Assistant time. Please tell me what your experiences are in the public school and we are School District no. 41 (Burnaby). I don't know if we have a right as parents to request more time because another boy in the classroom next door is being paired up with another ASD child and that person with no label has more aid time than my son. This does not sound right.

Please advise and all comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    email: bubblepiggy2@hotmail.com or post here.
    Thx.

    Hi there,

I hope someone out there can help. I'm thinking of kindergarten for next September for my ASD son. Has anyone had any experience (good or bad)with Montessori schools vs. regular public school ?
In particular, is Montessori too unstructured for ASD kids or does it allow them to prosper as they can go at their own pace. Also in question is that there is no "playing" with their peers, as it is seen as work time not play time. There is concern that social skills will not be worked on if they are encouraged to work alone. My son is high on the academic scale but low on social skills, that's why I have some concerns.
    Any input is greatly appreciated.
Some parents seem to know right away what their plan is (type of school) but this is a hard one for me as things change with time as all of us parents of ASD kids know.
Maple Ridge school district in particular is what I am looking at.

    thanks in advance,
    please email me at gsspence@shaw.ca

I was hoping to get some options to pass on to a mother – who's son was just diagnosed with aspbergers (Spelling?)..

She has been suggested RDI (Relationship development intervention)… but was wondering what options there are. I only know of ABA and most consultants don't take kids this old (14 years I believe).

    thanks for any help.

    Mr. P's proud parents,
I agree with Stella in that these are the moments we live for. When all the hard work is done these priceless times are for us to cherish and bring us out of the not so happy times.
I am sure Mr. P can feel the love beaming on him from his parents and His Creator.

    Cheers,
    Mr. M's mama
