Nancy WaltonParticipant
Hi Jill,
We are always looking for new therapists and we are glad to hear from you.
Therapists are hired by the parents of the autistic child and training is mostly done in the home by the consultant and/or a lead or senior therapist. There are also workshops sponsered by featbc (see feat Events on the home page or keep an eye out for upcoming workshops on the feat chat board) and Early Autism Project (call 604-473-5011). These are good workshops to go to either before you start with a family or after. If you don't have a family yet, the therapists or consultants running the workshop may be able to give you contacts.
To get on with a family you can go ahead and post on the "classifieds" section of this chat board. Make sure you state what area you live in and give your phone number or e-mail address. You may also state any previous experience you have with children. We are NOT really looking for someone with experience with autistic children unless ofcourse you have already worked on a Lovaas style home-based ABA program. It is important that you have experience that demonstrates good play skills with children, ability to multi-task and ability to follow through on expectations.
Parents in your area will probably contact you and you can take it from there. Once you are working for a family, if you are good, it is easy to get on to other teams.
Good luck,
Nancy W.
Nancy WaltonParticipantA good accountant:
Bonnie Mathie in White Rock has done our taxes for 7 years and when we got our son's diagnosis she took the responsibility of making herself an expert in tax issues for people with disabilities. She is good at getting the most out of your therapy expenses and giving you advice on what to do during the year.
Her phone number is 604 536-9166

Nancy WaltonParticipantDuring Monday's feat meeting some important discussions took place around successful integration of ABA treatment in the classooom. We felt this issue was extremely important for everyone doing a home based ABA program. I am therefore going to have a special ASBC/feat meeting in Surrey for those people who were unable to attend the Monday feat meeting.
I would like to extend this invitation to families with young children (not yet in school) as this will soon enough be one of your prime concerns. Sabrina Freeman and Jean Lewis will be there to speak.
The meeting will be Monday June 23 7-9pm at 7525 King George Hwy (next to Cosco). Please call me or e-mail me if you plan to attend so I can make sure we have enough space.

April 1st has come and gone. Have you or anyone else seen any anouncement regarding education and autism??
I must admit, I was hopeful once again. And after many many disappointments, I continue to be hopeful that maybe the govt. is late in giving us their announcement….
Please post if anyone has found anything. Meanwhile, call Deb Antifaev if you are frustrated with the education system. (as posted previously)

wiklo@shaw.caNancy WaltonParticipantHi, it's me again.
This time I want to encourage everyone running a home based ABA program to contact Michelle and Justin at himright@aol.com (see previou post by Michelle) and I think we should extend that invitation to people with children under 6 as well. My son just turned 5. He has been in therapy for 3 years now. It seems like just yesterday that we started. I thought funding was just around the corner back then. This next year will pass in the blink of an eye and then my son will turn 6 and be "magically cured". This over 6 funding issue is a concern to all of us.
Contact Justin today.

Nancy WaltonParticipantHere, here, Deb. Mark her words everyone. I was waiting for a March 17th announcement. And I have countless other dates upon which I was waiting for announcements. The latest thing I read in the March 17th announcement is that school boards do not have to integrate what is done in the home with what is done in the schools. It is up to each school board to make the "right decisions" for our children.
Contact Deb if you have not yet got a therapist in school with your child. Contact Deb if you have a child about to enter school. Let's get ourselves on record.

Nancy WaltonParticipantDid you know that peer play is an important venue for developing your childs social skills?
Is your child ready for peer play?
or should I ask…
Are YOU ready for peer play???
As a parent of an autistic child just entering the world of peer dates, I highly recommend the upcoming April 12th EAP conference (at SFU)which focuses on what you need to do as a parent to develop and maintain a peer play program for your child. You will hear from two moms who have set up successful peer dates for their children.
For therapists:
This conference also covers how social skills are developed through peer play and how to do video modelling. If you would like to attend this conference, just call Kathy at the Early Autism Project, 604-473-5011 or e-mail kschutt@telus.net to register.
Hope to see you there,
Nancy Walton (Casey's mom)
