Can parents personally interview the support worker for their child in school?

Our experience has been a nightmare at our vancouver catchment school. I am frequently at the point of tears.
The kindergarten support worker has left our son, who has ASD and type 1 diabetes in a medical situation that could have left him in a coma, seizure or worse. All she had to do was give him a glass of juice. In fact, She MISSED THE EMERGENCY AND TOLD MY SON TO WAIT for mom to come.

Had we been able, we would have fired her on the spot. You cannot take chances with type 1 diabetes. I expected that the VSB support worker would have had experience or basic knowledge of type 1 diabetes, at least the biology and care of students with type 1 diabetes before she was hired.
There are any number of college or university students in the area who could learn the material in a week. I AM SO DISAPPOINTED WITH THE CURRENT SUPPORT WORKER THAT I WOULD RATHER LEAVE THE SCHOOL THAN CONTINUE THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR WITH MY SON IN HER CARE.

In addition to the diabetes low blood sugar disaster, the support worker is chronically ill. She has missed over three weeks of school since September.

The principal prefers to throw his hands in the air. He also sees fit to allow the support worker to act as a "classroom assistant" for all of the students. I was left no choice but to shout at him in the school office just to find a SECONDARY support worker SO I WOULD NOT HAVE TO CONTINUE TO STAY IN THE CLASSROOM MYSELF.

What do we do when the support workers are unreliable or in this case not qualified.?

These last few months have been very difficult.

Having problems with schools in Langley?

We have a high functioning 11 year old who does not have a school placement for next year. We were told that either he attends Middle School or we have to home school him. As parents, we do not feel he is ready for Middle school due to the current school's violation of the School Act.

We have only received a "temporary" IEP 2 weeks ago. This should have been completed at beginning of the school year. As a result, we had countless meetings since last year with the school and they would not include our input. In our experience, they also failed to have instructional control of our child and he has spend over 90% of the time in the 'planning center'. Isn't the whole purpose of having an SEA supposed to be geared toward teaching our son appropriate model behaviors to allow him to focus on academics. Our son is absolutely brilliant, and he has been achieving C's, when we know he is capable of at least B's. He has been labeled as a "problem" in the school and is automatically kicked out of the class room.

Besides writing a letter to the school board, and consulting with our MLA, are we supposed to put a second mortgage on our home just to hire a lawyer?

The problem in BC is, that no one in the school system seems to be accountable for ensuring that the government's $18,000 per year is spent appropriately on the child is it provided for.

We are at our wit's end and don't know what else to do. Our son deserves to be in a school next year just like any other child.

We feel we are being discriminated against and have had nothing but problems with the school.

If anyone has any advice as to what to do next, we would appreciate your help.

    Thanks

    Hi, nanaimo/cowichan

I have recently moved from England and have lots of experience working with people with autism however no ABA training. I am happy to start any training that was recommended but i am also very quick to pick things up and have extensive experience often working with people considered very challenging to mainstream services. I am keen to learn and happy to try put so you can see my abilities. I am looking in Nanaimo or cowichan for a training position, even just a few hours a week.

    many thanks
