    Hi Avery & Maureen:
That's a start – those are good points. I will pursue that route. About 4 yrs ago I had asked a "Club" – I rather not give their name, if they would help us with an ABA program. The criteria was it had to be a BC based consultant (they would not fund anyone from outside of BC), & it had to benefit 4 or more children. Will provide updates as we pursue this little task. Thanks again.

    Hi Everyone,
Does anyone know or ever heard of a group becoming a society that provides ABA support to children? We are a little group of parents that are thinking about trying to do this. Our goal is to become a society and access foundations like Variety Club, etc. We're not even sure how to begin or if this is even feasible. Our family has been doing private ABA with a Consultant from CAlgary since 1998, and split the airfare/accomodations with another family. But we have families that want to do ABA but can't afford to. Any help would be appreciated. Please email s_henke@hotmail.com.

I wanted to address this thread, since it closely mirrors the situation in Ontario.
There truely does seem to be such a division in camps between parents on how to best handle " government and beurocrats".
How do we effectively communicate our message which for me is that children are knowingly being harmed by our elected representatives, have been now for years and in many places accross this wonderful country continue to have their Rights Violated and their worth diminished to less than a cow.
I think what I have learned from Sabrina is that we need ALL types of people in this fight for these amazing children. We need people like myself who says things that make people very uncomfortable, but I will be the first to admit, I would not be the person you would want at a negotiation between their camp and ours…I would bring paint balls and water balloons among other things…but their are parents who have the skills and the reserve to deal with things on that manner.
I do firmly believe that pursuing legal action is paramount to REALLY changing the continuing violation of our children. Although I am not part of the law suit in Ontario, I fully support their actions and really am not too concerned what the liberals think or the NDP for that matter. The reason I say this is because do you not think that they realize the suffering , the total disregard and the abandonment of innocent CHILDREN. They do and frankly in my efforts to send out my statement in Ontario some of the PC's were disgusted by their own party.
If it were their children who were thrown out like yesterdays trash you can BET your *** they would be suing too and hoping you understood why.
We as parents are not doing anything wrong. We are with conviction, pride and compassion for innocent CHILDREN trying to correct a horrible and inhumane action that we have bestowed upon our own Canadian CHILDREN.
You don't have to soften your immage " to make them understand and see"….be who you are, take your role what ever that role may be…bomb thrower, negotiater, educator, legal leader and think about one thing… so far diplomacy and playing nice have moved us only in minute steps…
Its true that their are many ways to skin a cat and choke that cat with cream…
and I do understand the point that Andy was trying to make, but Andy realize this CHILDREN are still being harmed daily in one of the highest standard of living countries in the world and I doubt their is one " human" being that would not realize our frustration and agony and fault us for our intensity. After all we are talking about little beautiful CHILDREN, not vehicle recalls.

Justice Allan's decision was made public last week. I am numb – it is a very disappointing response for us. In my worst case scenario I could not have predicted this response. We are back to the drawing board, and depending on the advice of our lawyers, perhaps back in court.

An interesting world where there can be talk of $150 m in damages to a private lumber company for past actions on the part of the government juxtaposed to a supposition of "good faith" on the part of the government to do what is right for children with autism. Justice Allan's comments "crediting" families who have undertaken these programs on behalf of their children is feint praise. There is no victory in a finding of breach of charter with no obligation to remedy for all children. In the words of that famous philosopher Bill Gates "Rule Number 1 – Life is not fair – get used to it."

Tomorrow the sun will shine. "If it is to be it's up to me." We were just hoping to find a cleared path for some of the journey.

    Hello Everyone,

I am trying to locate the contact numbers for both WEAP and CEE. I am having difficulties with obtaining them from directory assistance in their areas. If anyone has either of these numbers, I would greatly appreciate having them.

Also, I was wondering if anyone has worked with Dr. Richard Foxx from Penn State. He informs me he has worked with a few FEAT families. I was hoping to talk to anyone that has met with him.

My name is Tina Linton and my email address is mailtina@home.com. Please feel free to contact me by phone as well @ (250) 385-1703.

Thank you all so much for your time!

    Hello everyone,
There are, so far, 3 consultants that have contacted us. However, we are do not have an experience with them and we do not know if they are suitable for us.
So far, they are Wendy Cheng, Kimberly Schmittou, and Lisa Wincz. We would like to ask anyone to contact us if they had experience with them.

Currently, we have a 2years/9month old boy requiring treatment. If there are any consultant that is experienced or suitable for us that you know, please contact us.
    Our email address is tao@infinet.net

    Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hello again! I now have a gripe to add:

I spoke with aa government person today… who shall remain nameless…about my daughter. I wanted some details about switching my aide but I ended up getting a LECTURE!

My daughter is a december 31st baby and she is supposed to enter kindergarten this september. We have decided to hold her back a year because a) she is a small child b) she missed the cutoff of having to start in 2002 instead of 2001 by 2 hours (!) c) she has a language delay, social delays blah blah blah I don't need to tell any of you about that ;-) and d) she is doing very well in her program so why not give her another year to see how much better off she is then?! We plan to do another year of preschool, 5 days a week to help prep for the big K.

It seems so logical to me.

Well first of all I was told that all of the preschools are or will be full so I had better make a decision quick! Registration has not actually started…. I've checked. So much for that theory. Then I was told that I have to keep the government people aware of my decisions and keep them informed. Ummm, why?

I was then "informed" about the parallel process where my daughter could enter kindergarten slowly over a period of months or weeks or something so that the school could adjust to my daughter and set up a program for her. Mmmmm, that sounds like a great idea. School set up program for my daughter… maybe CBI could do it?! ha! NO thank you. I should have said oh my Consultant should do that!

This same person has told me in the past that if I hold my daughter back she won't get services ie: have her aide paid for by them because she should have gone to kindergarten.

I am also questioned every time I bother to call (why, why do I call?!) about my Lovaas program. "you do a lovaas program don't you?" I'm asked if I have any questions about funding.

"Yes I do and her progess is amazing, thanks for asking" :)

oh a provincial election can't come soon enough! I will cast my vote with a flourish that is for sure.

    Hello everyone;

We are considering a relocation to the North Shore but I have some questions about schools.

    1. Does anyone know of a preschool that is receptive to ABA and/or working with your own therapist as an aide? If we move, we will likely be in the Lynn Valley area but I am willing to drive for the right situation.

Or does anyone know of preschools that are NOT receptive (so that I can avoid them?!)

    2. I'm wondering about the availability of good or green therpists in N. Van. We currently live in Maple Ridge but have difficulty getting people able to do a good job. I have a few on my team now but have a second team that is starting up (for my son) and have had a hard time filling in the gaps.

My question is when you have searched to fill a position have you had a large selection of people apply? Do you have difficulty filling a position? Do you get a lot of experienced people wanting the job?

    Thanks so much.

    Help!

I require some quick sound advice on how to deal with a Social Worker, when applying for respite allowance. I have heard that many families offset some of the cost of ABA therapy. How do you "ask" for the money instead of them supplying you with a "caregiver"? Any advice would be most appreciated.

    Thanks,

p.s. I will be meeting with a Soc. Worker later this week. :-)
