I am posting this on behalf of another family who are looking for a speech and language consultant (Vancouver, Lower Mainland) who has experience working with nonverbal children on the autism spectrum and is familiar with voice output systems. It is preferred that the SLP is familiar with and has experience working within ABA developed programs.
Please email me at ccooper@dccnet.com for more information.

Catherine CooperCatherine CooperMemberI am posting this message for another family who is interested in information regarding the North Vancouver School District. This family has heard that the district has recently made a positive shift and is allowing home ABA therapists to work in the classroom with the student. The interested family is from another school district and would like information/assistance regarding ABA therapists in the classroom. Please respond to ccooper@dccnet.com and I will forward the information.

CatherineCatherine CooperMemberHi All
A family in our community is moving to Calgary in 2 months. They have just received a diagnosis for their 3 year old and have approached me for information about services in Alberta. I would like to assist them by providing them with contacts/information regarding services in the Clagary area. If you can be of any help or have any info that may be relevent please contact me at ccooper@dccnet.com. and I will forward the information to them.
It has been suggested that they immediately apply for funding in BC even though they are moving in 2 months.
Thanking you in advance.

CatherineCatherine CooperMemberThis is to "anonymous" who was enquiring about Suzanne Jacobson and ABA.
Several years ago Suzanne was employed by the provincial government with Provincial Outreach Program. Our school district was one of the districts she was assigned to. I believe her role was to review the assessments of the kids and ensure that provincial funding given to the schools was being used correctly and that the child to whom the funding was attached was receiving the services he/she required within the school. She reviewed IEP's etc etc. To my knowledge Suzanne is NOT an ABA specialist. In fact, last year she was hired by our school to review my son's case and basically informed the school they were not required to and did not have the funding available to provide ABA intervention to my son within the school setting. Until that point in time, our school had been working towards a collabrative effort between myself and our ABA team and school team. I pushed hard for this and it was a frustrating endeavor for all concerned because of unions, funding, unwilling teachers etc etc. The harder I pushed the more the school retreated and they brought Suzanne in to try to come up with a solution. Her solution was "leave ABA at home. The school is not required to do it!". Since then we have had a new school team in place and are once again working in the right direction.
I believe however, that Suzanne's expertise may be in the area of diagnosis and not in the implementation of Lovaas ABA programs.
If you require additional info please email to ccooper@dccnet.com.

(Sam's mom)Catherine CooperMemberI am responding to the dicussion regarding the kindergarten transition program funding.
Our son is 5 1/2 and currently enrolled in kindergarten. We received written confirmation in June that funding for a kindegarten program was in place and that decisions were being made in regards to the amount of funds and how to administer them. We have since been told that funds in the amount of $1080.00 per month were available to each family in our region whose children were of kindergarten age and these funds could be used towards a program up to the year 2003. We have been told by our MCF social worker that the funds would be paid to the service provider of our choice. We our beginning an ABA program with E.A.P. beginning in November. According to our MCF social worker a contract would be set up between MCF and E.A.P. and that the $1080.00 would be paid directly to E.A.P. and we would pay the balance of costs i.e. therapist wages, etc. etc. We chose this method as it was the least complicated and involved only one contract being set up. We could have used the funds to pay for therapist wages however each therapist would have to set up a contract with the Ministry and this seemed more complicated. Also, we felt we would loose some control over our therapists in terms of wages, etc. etc.
To date we have received no written confirmation of this funding and a contract between the ministry and E.A.P. has still to occur. We are keeping the faith that this will happen and will continue to phone, write letters etc to ensure that it will happen. We will also continue to advocate for funding to be available past the age of 6 should our son still require an ABA program.
