ParticipantHello Everyone,
A FEAT BC delegation traveled to Atlantic Canada recently (the "FEAT BC Goes Coastal" tour) to meet with concerned families and key politicos, in the ongoing effort to establish medically necessary autism treatment under Medicare. A CTV News story related to the tour is available at the link below (highly recommended).

MemberHi all,
Did anyone get down to SanDiego to take in the ABA conference?
I understand that Dr. Lovaas presented some work with regard to "Peer Play Dates" and ABA in natural settings … If anyone got down there I would love to hear of the details.
Dave.

MemberDoris….
Please feel free to contact me via e-mail to discuss bio-medical treatment. You will quickly find that the FEAT BC discussion forum isn't the place for that topic.

ParticipantDear Doris,
Our family moved from England 4 years ago (our son is now almost 7). I know a big move and a diagnosis is a shock. I also know that many changes need to be made here but things have come a long way too. There are many qualified and talented consultants in BC now. I have done ABA myself and found much success with it. I have also made some dietary modifications but not gone for the whole biomedical approach. Everyone should have choices. When you are here longer, you will see that the fight is for the opportunity to make choices too. Without proper funding people will not be able to access those opportunities. Good luck with your path! I am happy to chat if you wish.

MemberHi Doris,
Welcome home. Things are in a bit of a muddle still in our province and country with regard to ASD supports and services. Good people within our community continue to work hard to further develop options and supports but there is much to be done still.
There seems to be some relief for folks on special diets via CCRA policy but that may be limited to Celiac related needs. Check with CCRA for more details but I fear that it is limited to people who have official diagnosis of celiac disease.
Given the state of the research we elected to work within the Lovaas framework and our son continues to thrive and enjoy the approach. However, I do appreciate that for some it is not the "path". Being a fan of B.F. Skinner I have an interest in his work and its application and have read much of the theoretical base and research work. I also have connected with those who work in the field and would love to "chat" more about it… However, it is my understanding that this (FEAT) BBS is dedicated to the discussion of the Lovaas approach… you might want to connect with VBers via this BBS: http://vbforum.ca/ . Also of interest… I think Dr. Partington will be in Vancouver in July ( http://www.actbc.ca/workshops_and_training/workshops/2007/ABA_Classrooms_Partington_2007.htm )

MemberHaving just returned to Vancouver from the UK I am shocked to find that services in the UK seemed better than in the big country of Canada.
I had a phone conversation with the Autism Society in Vancouver and was left feeling extremely depressed at the lack of facility for my boy who has ASD. He is 4.
I wasnt naive about the lack of services, but i didnt realise just how much its going to cost to educate my son in this province!
Further, the patronising attitude of the Autism Society towards my intervention method of choice (VB) and biomed was awe inspiring.
I am seeking a support group of like minded parents who are committed to biomedical interventions and who are self educating their children, either through ABA or other methods (RDI, homestyled programs).
Finally, how do you all afford to buy organic food in this province? Its so expensive? And as for "capers", they should be ashamed of themselves the prices they charge. I went to buy their gf/cf bread but the cost has made me buy a new oven, and i will shortly be baking again!!
its good to be home though. Just didnt think it was going to be this hard. Lovaas styled ABA seems to have a stranglehold on the province of B.C.? We were never happy with this approach and it stunted our boy, as each child is different. I hope to find a community of VBers and biomedders soon.
