    Attention Parents and Professionals:

There will be a joint F.E.A.T. of B.C. and Autism Society of B.C. parent meeting on Tuesday, October 25th.

We are pleased to be co-hosting: "So – You want to be my child's MP?"

A Federal General Election is coming soon, probably in the spring, 2006. What are the federal political partys' positions with respect to people with disabilities and specifically people with autism? What are their positions on: treatment and treatment funding, access to health care, education, housing, employment, discrimination and protection under the Charter?

This is the first in what we intend to be a series of meetings with candidates representing all the federal political parties. F.E.A.T. of B.C. and The Autism Society of B.C. does not endorse any political party or candidate.

Our guest this meeting will be: John Weston, candidate for the Conservative Party of Canada, West Vancouver, Sunshine Coast, Sea-to-Sky Country. Come out and meet John for an evening of presentation, questions and answers but mainly conversation. This is a valuable opportunity for parents and concerned professionals to hear what our potential members of parlaiment have to say on this issue. It will also help determine how we, the parents and concerned professionals cast our votes.

    Where: St. David's United Church
1525 Taylor Way, West Vancouver, B.C.

    Time: Tuesday, Oct. 25th, 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.

Please RSVP Andrea Finch at andreafinch@shaw.ca or Eva Lee at eva@evaleeassociates.com to reserve a spot.

Thanks! See you on the 25th.

    Micky,

There are some agencies that provide a toy library lending service. I know of OPTIONS in Surrey (I think their website is http://www.options.bc.ca) which has a great service. For a small, or possibly no yearly fee you can join their membership and take out toys for several weeks to a month at a time.

I know several non-program families who use this service and it would be an awesome resource for those families out there who need to have a new repetoir of toys every few weeks.

If Surrey is too far for you there may be other agencies who offer this. I would contact OPTIONS to see if they know of any in your area.

    All the best,

    Jennifer

    Regarding Criminal Record checks:

Our municipality (Coquitlam) is RCMP and they do criminal record checks for free when you say it is for volunteer work (and we've never been told that there is not enough "manpower" to do this).

My suggestion would be to send your therapist back to the RCMP and ask for a criminal record check b/c she/he would like to volunteer with young children (I wouldn't even bother sending her in with a letter). At the very least, they have to give her a criminal record check, even if she has to pay for it. I believe that they cost $45.00 if you have to pay.

I've never heard of someone being turned away – I believe she just has to fill out a form and they send it to Victoria to be completed – so not sure what happened in Richmond. I wouldn't think that the municipalities would be so different when both are RCMP.
    Hope this helps.

    Hi,

Can anyone direct me to the agency that performs criminal records check for residents of Richmond? I've just hired a therapist who lives in Richmond. When she went to the Richmond RCMP with a letter of request from me, they told her that they don't do criminal records check for indvidual "employers," only for organizations, citing not enough manpower. Thanks for your help.

    micky,
This is a common problem. We have addressed it successfully by rotating the toys. Pick a bunch that no longer hold interest and put them completely out of sight for at least 6 weeks. When you pull them out again they will seem "new" and hold interest once again. If you rotate your toy stock this way you will spend less money and less time tripping over toys. Also useful is using services such as toy traders (? langley) which are basically shops where you can trade your used toys for other folks used toys.

    Hello All,

Need some help or advice, our son Ethan is 2 years and 3 months old and has just started his ABA Therapy for 1 month. Ethan gets bored with toys outside of therapy really quickly. Normally after a couple of days. Buying new toys every week is not going to be an option longer term. What do you suggest? Please email me at micky.so@maxxium.com with your suggestions, thxs, Micky

Wanted some input regarding self-stim with jargons that are meaningless.

My son has been in a home program for almost 15 months. He is always a complaint boy and has improved a lot but in the past few weeks/month he has increasing self-stim with meaningless jargons that are difficult to redirect. Sometimes redirection leads to more negative behaviours. He may have picked up these jargons from videos, machines/books with sounds…etc.

If you have this experience with your child or your client, could you share with me what methods work to reduce this self-stim behaviour?

I know this is a question for the consultant and we cannot generalize our experience, however I like to hear your sharing and how you tackle this behaviour.

    Thank you in advance!

    Stella
