Executive skills, or executive functioning is at the heart of everything we do and plays a significant role on an individual’s ability to be successful in achieving goals- no matter how big or small.  Planning, prioritization, working memory, self-regulation, response inhibition, sustained attention, task initiation, and organization are all executive functions that, when impaired, can impact one’s ability to complete the simplest of tasks.  For children on the autism spectrum this impairment can be significant.  This presentation will outline what executive functioning is, how it develops in children, and how it can look different for children with ASD.  It will identify the current research surrounding teaching executive functioning skills, interpret that research to practice, and present some case-study data on how we teach executive functioning skills in our practice.

Presented by Heidi St. Pierre, M. Ed., BCBA & Bethany Schilling, M. Ed., BCBA

Hi again everyone – wow, within minutes of my post, I have had a pile of helpful responses in my inbox.  This is why we love the FEAT board!  You are amazing for taking time to reply so quickly.  I will pass on your advice to the family and am so grateful to all of you.

I realized belatedly that I had a related question on their behalf:  they have been told of a private diagnostic test which costs a couple of thousand dollars, which yields a ‘for-sure’ answer as to the diagnosis.  There was nothing like this in our day and I’m just wondering if anyone has any info. on this – again, replies on this question to my private e-mail – andreafinch@shaw.ca – would be appreciated.

Hi there, fellow parents.  We have family friends with a 2 year old they are thinking needs a preliminary pediatric assessment.  It would seem that Dr. de Levie has retired – does anyone have recent recommendations for pediatricians either on the North Shore, or in the Vancouver area generally?  Please e-mail me privately at andreafinch@shaw.ca.  Many thanks.

Welcome parents, family members, health care providers and educators to the Winter 2018 edition of the Association for Science in Autism Treatment!

The Mission statement for ASAT is:

ASAT’s mission : We promote safe, effective, science-based treatments for people with autism by disseminating accurate, timely, and scientifically sound information, advocating for the use of scientific methods to guide treatment, and combating unsubstantiated, inaccurate and false information about autism and its treatment.

Since autism was first identified, there has been a long history of failed treatments and fads, levied on vulnerable individuals as well as on their families. From the scandal of the “refrigerator mother” theory, to the ongoing parade of “miracle cures” and “magical breakthroughs,” history has been dominated by improbable theories about causation and treatments.

Many of these treatments have been too quickly adopted by professionals, too readily sensationalized by the media, and too hastily embraced by hopeful consumers – well before supporting evidence or reasonable probability existed for their effectiveness or safety.

Since ASAT was established in 1998, it has been our goal to work toward adopting higher standards of accountability for the care, education and treatment of all individuals with autism.

This is a free publication https://www.asatonline.org/newsletter/archived-newsletters/

Please click on the Winter 2018 edition for the latest newsletter.  Folks, the information regarding treatment is up-to-date, and will save you the time, money and heartache of trying treatments that are not data-backed.  Please read, learn and make good choices for your children with Autism.

Hello: (sorry forgot the link in the previous email!)

Sabrina Freeman asked me to post this questionnaire to this group in order for everyone’s opinions to me heard.

My name is Barbara Rodrigues. I live in the Okanagan. I am a parent of an adult son with autism and also studying for my Master’s in Psychology through the University of Roehampton. I am currently conducting my research project/thesis and I am studying parents of adult children (18+ years old) and the stresses involved.

The questionnaire is online and takes about 20 minutes to complete. It is completely anonymous. My hope is this study will shine a light on a much neglected portion of our population, the needs of parents of adult children with ASD.

Thank you in advance for your participation. Please share the link with any other groups or parents that you are affiliated with.
