I dont know who to contact to report this incident, but I am sure that this should not be dealt simply as "one of those days with an autistic child" thing.
I took my son to the mall today and stopped by the store called Produce Outlet to buy some fruits, which is located in the mall. We went in through the back door as our car was parked near by. As we walked in, my son seemed to have been holding for washroom and he quickly went into a washroom near the back door. It was written employees only on the door. So I asked one of the workers in the store if my son can use it. But at the same time he was using it. The staff came walking toward the washroom yelling at my son to get out at once. I told her he is not finished peeing. And she went into the washroom where my son was standing in front of the toilet bowl yelling at him to get out. I was so shocked. And then another woman at the counter shouted at me that he should have read the sign and go to the washroom for customers. I tried to be patient as much as I could and explained to her that he cannot read and that he was in a hurry (while this other woman was still shouting at my son to get out in the washroom). Then the woman at the counter ordered me that I should wash their washroom. I said "NO, I am not going to wash your washroom."
Who do I contact to report these people?
My son is just a 10 year old boy and non-verbal. And after all this, while we were walking back to our car, his head was dropped and I saw tears in his eyes. Even though he does not know how to read, he understands what is going on around him. They should not treat any child like that, whether he/she has a disability or not. Does anyone know who I should contact to report these people and make them learn their lessons?Lucia

Hello parents,
I really need some advice for dental service for my 9 year old autistic child. Two months ago,I was told by the assistant at my child's dental office that I could go for a dental treatment by another dentist (not his own who charged a lot) and was told to pay $850 for the estimate cost (about $2,700) and now was told that the Healthy Kid program won't cover part of it (since I my wage was higher than low-income ) and my son's appointment for Aug 17 was cannceled. They said now there are two options: go on BC Children's waiting list about 6 months and I will have to pay $700 more for aneasthetic out of my pocket on top of the $850 or go private (with them) and pay $1200+ for faster service (room rental+ aneasthetic). I am so frustrated because of the cost and the waste of time that I've been waiting till now and will have to start waiting for more.
I wonder if you know of / or experienced any good dentist that will do the job faster and cheaper? My son is so freak out when he hears the noise of the machine at dentist office but did fine with the sedation when they did two temporary filling for his teeth. But then the dentist insisted to do aneathestic for permanent filling (not sure if that's because he makes more money from doing that). I wonder if your child had the teeth done by getting sedation?
I am afraid some of his teeth will have to have crowns which will cost a fortune…I checked around and found some places and hope to hear from you if you have any experience with these:
Dr. Pau Wittenberg on West Broadway
Dr. Maria Tugbang

August 4, 2009 at 11:32 pm #5608Stephanie SpenceMemberThanks to all who replied. For David, I posted my email address to discuss this privately instead of on the board. It's the only way I thought of to get in contact with other parents who have kids with Autism that may have similar concerns. I don't need to address this with my team because my son actually has no problem going to the doctor, he actually likes it, and myself well I can handle it, but thanks for your heartfelt concern.
August 4, 2009 at 11:12 pm #5609David BridgesMemberLet's face it: vaccinations are not fun for anyone – typical or autistic. My son sure didn't and still doesn't like them or any other medical procedure, but that doesn't mean they caused his autism. There's no support for it even though it's been studied ad nauseam.
Thanks to all the parents out there who continue to do their part to prevent the spread of deadly infectious diseases by having their children vaccinated. And to Stephanie I suggest that you and your therapeutic team develop a program to help make medical visits easier on your son (and yourself!)
Please can this board return to science-based autism treatment topics now? -
