Important information for all parents in SD36:
The ABA Advisory group will be meeting tomorrow, Tuesday April 17th. The new Student Support Services Administrator, who has taken over from Anne Turner, will be there to meet us. Her Name is Cory McLaughlin and is is very important that we have a large turnout as she is our go-to person in the district for the ABA Support Worker program in the Surrey school district.
The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 17th from 7-9PM in the new district offices in Surrey.

Thank you!
Nancy WaltonParticipantDear Parents;
There has recently been a number of posts asking for potential ABA Support Workers for the Surrey School District. On behalf of the ABA Advisory to the Surrey School District, I would like to remind parents that there is no guarantee that your ABA SW candidate will be working with your child. The district hires its own employees and then those employees have an opportunity to post to the positions of their choosing on a seniority basis from the ABA SW pool.
The district now has over 120 ABA SW (who have more than 1000 hours of home based ABA experience), and while that number increases each year, the district continues to be short ABA SWs so it is important that we continue to build capacity.
So in a nutshell:
If you BRING a new ABA SW to the district:
The best that can happen is that you will get that person with your child.
The worst that can happen is another ABA SW will take the position with your child, either way, you get someone with a lot of ABA training.
If you DO NOT bring an ABA SW to the district:
The best that can happen is another ABA SW will want a position with your child
The worst that can happen is you will get an SEA without ABA training and you can be waitlisted for an ABA SW.
If you are in the Surrey School District or will be next September, we strongly recommend you attend the next ABA Advisory meeting where you can meet the new District Principal of Student Support Services, Cory McLaughlin, who is our guest that evening and get more information.

Nancy WaltonParticipantGood points Dave.
Parents, if something happened to you tomorrow, and you were no longer there to look after your child, what would happen? Would your child still get the treatment you have been subsidizing? Would your child go into foster care and get treatment? Would someone take in your child and pay for the treatment?
We can not stress enough, the importance of getting involved. Help out with Medicare for Autism Now, Featbc, ASBC or ABA Support Network. These are all organizations that continually lobby, fight, educate, raise awareness, protest or litigate for access to autism treatment.
If you want to protect your child throughout his or her lifetime, you need to be involved. Pay it forward. Change is happening, but with complacency, we could lose all that we have gained. With your help, we can gain even more for our children.
Nancy WaltonParticipantJust wanted to clarify that Zach is looking for a student to work with as an ABA Support Worker in the Surrey school district. He'd be happy to get to know the child during the summer.
My previous post:
One of my therapists is going to be applying to be an ABA SW in the Surrey School district for September. He has been with us for 3 years and has a solid understanding of ABA. Here is a not from him:Hello, my name is Zach Martin and I'm looking to apply as an ABA SW on the school board for children with Autism. I've been doing ABA for just under three years, working with children of varying ages and abilities. Soon I have 1000 hours of experience. I live in South Surrey and don't have a car, but am an avid bus user. Please feel free to email me at martin_zach@hotmail.com if you are looking for a support worker for your child. Thank you for your consideration.

Nancy WaltonParticipantCTV is interested in doing some reporting on challenges in accessing adult and child services, and is looking to interview families whose experiences can help tell these stories.
Moms On the Move needs you to contact them (address below) if you are willing to be interviewed, if your story has not previously been highlighted in the news media and if you fit the following profiles:
1) Children's services: Family under severe stress that has contemplated or been forced to place their child (age 0 – 19) in government care due to a lack of access to sufficient respite, early intervention, emergency short-term intensive care and/or other supports that could have helped them cope without giving up the child. CTV is particularly interested in talking to any family whose child has been placed in a group home so please pass this on if you know such a family.
2) Adult services: Family of an adult who has/is being denied a group home placement and/or other supports and/or who has been forced to move out of a group home and into home sharing against their wishes.
Please MOMs ASAP and I will connect you with CTV if it sounds like a good fit.
Being able to tell these personal stories is the most powerful way to explain to the public and to politicians the importance of adequate resources and effective programs to support families of adults with developmental disabilities and children & youth with special needs, so our sincere thanks in advance for the enormous contribution made by those who share their stories.
