    Hi Alina,

I agree with everything Barbara Rodrigues has said. I thought of one instance where you might pay someone $40 per hour and that would be for an INTERN. An intern is someone who has a Bachelors degree, has many years experience in ABA and is now taking a Masters degree in ABA and is doing their clinical practicum under the supervision of a BCBA consultant.

So, the intern would be doing the programming (not the BI work) and would be training the BI's as would the consultant. They are cheaper than a consultant because they are not yet certified and don't have the level of experience that the consultant has. You would then hire BI's to do the intensive one-on-one work.

If that is the case, $40 is appropriate, but the person would be a supervisor, not a BI. Having said that, it's important to make sure that what you have there is truly an Intern.

Check out http://www.abasupportnetwork.com and http://www.asdfunding.com for more information (although this issue has raised the fact that I'll need to get the ABA Support Network Careers page updated to include "interns"). Both are parent run, non-agency websites.

    FREE BIKES

My complex is cleaning unclaimed bikes out of the bike room. There are 14 bikes available for FREE. Several for about age 7 or 8, a nice one for a 10 year old and then several preteen or short adult bikes. I have to get rid of them by Sunday, so please e-mail me immediately if you are able to come out to White Rock to pick up one or two (or more).

Has anyone used Behavior Tracker Pro on an Android system? I am looking for a way to keep data (and hopefully have STO's available) on a tablet. Please e-mail me at abawiklo@gmail.com.

    Thanks

    Hi featers,
It's that time of year again, when I decide to take up my battle with the Provincial Government over the discrimination that our kids experience with regards to the home owners grant. This is not a huge grant, but it can save our families about $100 – $250 per year if we get it. Here is the problem. The grant is only given if the person with the disability has a PHYSICAL disability. It is not considered for our children and adults who need constant one-on-one support. I once wrote to them to point out this discrimination and this is what they wrote back:

"Eligibility for the additional grant due to a disability is directed to property owners, or relatives permanently living in the home, who have a permanent physical or mental disability, which is sufficiently severe as to result in a considerable decrease or loss of mobility".

In other words, you need a physical disability to get the grant.

I have written to my MLA a number of times and to no avail. I am wondering if anyone would like to start up a class action lawsuit, or look into going to the small claims court for this. I do not have time to start up something, but would be happy to join if anyone else would like to organize.

    Any volunteers?

    Summer Support Workers

I put out a posting a few days ago with out being careful about it's wording. The Surrey Association for Community Living (SACL) is hiring day camp staff for the summer. I wanted to encourage BIs to apply as they do recognize the need for people who have ABA training, HOWEVER, ABA training is not a guarantee for a position. SACL goes through a hiring process with many applicants. SACL will be hiring Summer Support workers for children with a variety of disabilities, they are not "ABA Support Workers" like what we have in the Surrey School district. So, this is not an ABA specific job.

Also, I would like to clarify that when someone gets hired to do the day camps, they work in the Surrey Parks and Rec camps supporting children with disabilities for a SEVEN WEEK period. If your child is attending a camp with aide support from SACL, the BI MIGHT be able to work with your child (for up to two weeks). But the BI will be working with other children, possibly not children who do ABA programs, throughout the rest of the summer.

This also means the BI would not be available to your own team during summer camp hours.

I apologize for my previous post which was quite misleading.

Surrey Association for Community Living is willing to hire an ABA person to work with kids in the summer camps. If you have signed up your child for a Surrey Day camp, encourage one of your therapists to get hired and voila! you will have ABA during summer camps. Resumes can be sent to Kelly McCafferty at kmccafferty (at ) commliv.com.

Kelly is interviewing right now, so it is important to apply right away.

Therapist Available for summer In White Rock

One of my awesome therapists has a daughter, Chelsea, who would like to get ABA training before going to UNBC in Prince George in September. Chelsea has experience as a swim coach, so once trained this could be an awesome opportunity for getting your child to learn how to swim.

Chelsea recognizes that she is not available for long, so she is willing to train for FREE. You can then pay her once she is trained. Also, it is likely that she will return to South Surrey to work in the summers for years to come.

If interested, please e-mail her at
    chelsea.m.r@gmail.com
and she'll send you her resume.

    Hi Lee,

Some children respond very well to melatonin. We used to give 1mg of a sub-lingual tablet. It melts in the mouth and within 15 minutes of taking it, our son would be conked out. I only had to give it for a short while and he got into a pattern and didn't give it any more. Other kids need to take it all their lives.

When my son was 13, he went through a period where he would be up until midnight unless I gave him 3mg. After a month, he started to be able to go to sleep without it. I keep it handy for camps or sleep overs or just wired days.

Hope it works. As I said, it does not work on all kids.
