Kathryn Theroux, MS, RCC, is a clinical counsellor, behavior consultant, and intern at ABLE Developmental Clinic, Inc. During the school year she works with families of children with special needs to increase skills and reduce problem behaviors. She is also a part of ABLEs autism diagnostic team. Her work includes supporting families to set meaningful goals and designing treatment plans that help parents, teachers, and kids work well together. She is a firm believer in evidence-based practice and data-based decision-making.
TOPIC:
Kathryn will discuss the challenging subject of sexuality and autism spectrum disorders. She will address whether and when to have "the talk," what to say, and how to say it. Please join us to learn about this key aspect of human development and its impact on the treatment, education, and quality of life of individuals with ASD. As requested by the guest speaker, please be prepared to do a Salt-N-Pepa imitation.

Andrea has a Masters degree from the University of Southampton. She has worked for the Young Autism Project in the UK, Autism Partnership in California, and now the ABLE Development Clinic in BC.
TOPIC:
Anxiety is one of the biggest problems that children with autism have to face. Fortunately, effective treatment is possible using cognitive behaviour therapy.

Nathan is a Behaviour Consultant with a Masters of Science degree in Applied Behavior Analysis from St. Cloud State University, one of the best universities in this field. Nate has 8 years of experience, and has worked with students who are verbal and non verbal; beginning, intermediate and advanced learners; and students with various difficult behaviour profiles. Throughout his career Nate has consulted to home based, school and residential settings in BC and the Yukon. Nate is a certified Associate Instructor with the Crisis Prevention Institute.
TOPIC:
How are the technical differences between Lovaas, Verbal Behaviour and other types of ABA? When parents know the similarities and differences, they are more able to critically evaluate the claims of a treatment provider promoting a brand of ABA. They are also more able to tell if a treatment provider is practicing the type of ABA they claim to know.

The focus of this topic to explore the do's and don'ts of summer. Now that school is out and routines are changing what can families do to best support their child.
Areas to be reviewed include:
– how to find the right summer program/camp and what to look for in one
– how to build structure during the summer
– how to bring peer play / social skill development into the summer
– how to support the gains made during the school year
– how to prepare your child for back to school in SeptemberWe will also be sure to provide time to answer questions parents may have.
