    GUEST SPEAKER:

    Jean Lewis is one of most prominent autism advocates in the history of Canada. She was previously a founding director of FEAT BC, plus a litigant and member of the legal steering committees for both Auton and Hewko. Jean is currently continuing the advocacy in multiple roles, including directorship of Medical for Autism Now.

    TOPIC:

    Jean will present her approach to advocacy in the public school system. This approach is based on the principle that there should be no compromise in the fight for a child’s human rights, and we should accept nothing less than a full implementation of the medically necessary support.

    Sarah Pastrana has been in the field since 2002, and has been worked under the supervision of Sharon Baxter and Dr. Sara White. She obtained her master’s degree from St. Cloud State University, which has one of the world’s best master’s programs in ABA. Sarah has wide experience from working in numerous home-based treatment programs and in two residential ABA teaching homes. She also teaches a course in the ABA Support Worker Program at Surrey College.

    TOPIC:

    Sarah will discuss:
    – Functions of stereotypy;
    – Treatment options supported by research;
    – Assessment and treatment in the home setting.

    GUEST SPEAKER:

    Kathryn Theroux, MS, RCC, is a clinical counsellor, behavior consultant, and intern at ABLE Developmental Clinic, Inc. During the school year she works with families of children with special needs to increase skills and reduce problem behaviors. She is also a part of ABLE’s autism diagnostic team. Her work includes supporting families to set meaningful goals and designing treatment plans that help parents, teachers, and kids work well together. She is a firm believer in evidence-based practice and data-based decision-making.

    TOPIC:

    Kathryn will discuss a few particularly tough topics for parents of children with autism, such as sexuality and vulnerability. She will provide case studies, but parents are welcome to talk about their own children. Please bring questions about difficult decisions you’ve been facing, and be prepared to share your experience with situations that are tough for others.

    GUEST SPEAKER:

    Dave Taylor is the parent of a child with autism and has been running an expensive home-based ABA program for 8 years.

    Dave has done extensive research into the financial side of managing an ABA team, and has gathered information on all kinds of issues, from his own experiences and from feedback from other parents.

    TOPIC:

    Some of the topics that Dave will cover during this meeting are:

    – The new Family Care Giver Amount tax credit
    – Disability Tax Credit
    – Medical Expenses
    – Federal tax credits and tips for tax time

    This is a must-see presentation for anyone that is running or thinking of setting up a home based ABA program. The content of this presentation applies to programs for individuals from pre-diagnosis to age 18.

    This presentation is about the use of augmentative communication systems to facilitate classroom integration, with focus on the iPad. The strategies covered are useful for teachers, aides and parents.

    GUEST SPEAKER:

    Bohdanna has been involved with children with autism for the past 2 decades. Bohdanna’s background includes teaching in the public school system in the states as well as working as a Clinical Director at a Lovaas’ replication site. Bohdanna prides herself on working with families to advocate for their children’s individual needs both in the home and school settings. She has travelled around the world opening clinics in the UK, USA and Canada. Bohdanna graduated from UBC with a Masters in Special Education/Counseling and Psychology with emphasis in autism. She is also a board certified behaviour analyst.

    Bohdanna is the Executive Director of Harmony House CARES, a facility that serves children with autism in the Vancouver area. She is responsible for overseeing the preschool and day to day running of Harmony House. She continues to hold a small case load of children with autism who seek services from Harmony House and provides monthly supervision to staff. She lives in Surrey with her husband and three children ranging in age from 9-20.

    Pat Tesan is a parent who has successfully helped her disabled adult child achieve a level of independence and dignity which many consider impossible. Prior to retirement, she has mentored thousands of families as an employee of PLAN (the Planned Lifetime Advocacy Network). Pat has inspired countless parents with her strength and optimism, and has given them the hope and the tools to do what may have previously seemed unimaginable.

    Mary is generally considered the best lawyer available for advising executors, administrators and trustees about the probate process, and for administration of estates and trusts. She is also highly sought-after for the preparation of powers of attorney, nominations of committee and representation agreements, and for advising attorneys, committees and representatives about their roles and responsibilities.
