How upsetting for you! It can be so difficult to figure out what has happened when the language isn't there. I had something similar (but at least it wasn't in our home) when my now 13-year-old son was about the same age. There was a song that for some reason terrified him (Do Your Ears Hang Low). It was on one of our children's music tapes in our vehicle and when the song came on he screamed so violently that I pulled over and turned off the car (and the music stopped). Once he was calm and I started the car, the song came back on and he got upset again. That was the ONLY way I was able to figure out what the trigger was. The song came on in diaper gym (in the local community centre)one day and caused a similar response. We had to leave right away. I was unable to even drive into the parking lot of the community centre without his getting upset for months (awkward considering that was where his swimming lessons were, too). I hope you are able to find out what has scared your son, and know that others like me are thinking of you and hoping that you find an answer quickly.

    Subject: special needs cases

The legislative session is approaching, and the NDP is still looking for stories about students with special needs who are not getting the services they deserve in the public k-12 system.

Would you mind passing this message on to your various networks?

We are looking for families willing to have their name and their child’s name used in the House.

People can feel free to contact me directly.

    Thanks.

Thanks Allan (Elizabeth's Dad) – you put that very well. The studies that "prove" vaccines to be safe (think back to the study in Sweden – or was it Norway – a few years back) have HUGE problems making them inapplicable for a variety of reasons, yet people take them as gospel truth. I have home videos of my child dated 3 months apart, but he's barely distinguishable as the same child. I asked my doctor for his health records between those two dates. He was on antibiotics for an ear infection (yet another) during the first video, and had his MMR shot a few weeks before the second video. Coincidence? I can never go back and undo the vaccinations to be sure, but I certainly wish I had never held him down so they could administer them. The fact that they have found the measles virus (from the vaccine strain, not the wild strain)in children with autism's intestines and brains makes me very unsure about the vaccine's safety. Perhaps it is the measles virus that is the problem (the children from Japan received it as well – even though it was not administered with the mumps and rubella).

Alan, I thought you might also be interested in a magnetic clay that is being used. We are going to try it instead of chelation. The website is evenbetternow.com.

    Hi Marie and Dwight,

I believe that my son's MMR vaccination contributed to his autism (but was not the sole cause). Unless they've changed the schedules, the MMR shots are not until 12/18 months, and those are the ones that it may be beneficial to split into single "doses" rather than having three live viruses injected at once. You may also see if you can find someone doing the nasal spray instead of the injections – it is supposed to be safer as well. The DPT shots that come first have a risk of mercury (thimerosal) in them, though I believe that is more of a problem in the states than in Canada. I would ask to read the label on the serum before having it injected to confirm that it contains no thimerosal. It is up to you to determine what risks you are willing to take when the time for MMR roles around. Personally, I wish my son had never had it although I know the diseases are also dangerous. You should also make sure your child is absolutely 100% before you have them immunized. If they've been sick recently their systems may be more easily "injured" by the vaccinations. Good luck!

Unfortunately the NBC Autism DVD's are no longer available. There were only 5000 made and they are all gone. I called their customer service and apparently there are no plans to make more available. Darn!

Love this thread! I purchased a copy/fax/scan/printer that I love, too. I found an ink cartridge refill kit at Costco for $25. I returned the two new cartridges I'd bought but thankfully not opened ($102) and have already refilled mine several times. Hooray!

I'd also vote for a laminator. They can really bring out your creative side! I took a sheet of legal sized construction paper (lengthwise), trimmed the bottom 2 1/2 inches or so off, then lined them up with just a slight gap between the two pieces before laminating them (so it would fold up nicely there). Then, using double-sided tape made narrow "pockets" in it. I made up (laminated, of course) picture cards to put in the pockets to use as a scheduler. Worked like a charm!

Hello. My son will be moving from kindergarten (afternoons) to full days in the fall. He will be getting full-time TA coverage. However, I have just learned that the school board, in its infinite wisdom, has decided to have two part-time positions fill it instead of one full-time. Guess they don't have to pay benefits that way. We have had the most fantastic year with a woman who, thankfully, would likely have enough union seniority to apply for his posting, but now would only be able to help him 1/2 days. My son is very shy/anxious (though sweet as anything!) and would not adjust well to this arrangement. Has anyone out there had experience fighing this type of problem with a school board? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello everyone,

I am doing market research to determine the viability of my business idea, which is sewing weighted vests and blankets. My five-year-old son with autism has found these products helpful, but I would appreciate input from other parents/therapists/consultants. Ideally I would like to have 100 "volunteers" take a short (11 question) survey. If you would be interested in completing this survey, please email me at: claire-spencer@shaw.ca. Thank you!
