Lis LouwrierParticipantI have to say I am with Dave. This string is offensive. One has nothing to do with the other. This is exactly the sort of thing which does not help our kids get their needs met and moreover hurt other people in our community who need our support.
On a different note, I have been doing ABA for a long time but we need to work together with other groups if our children's future is to be secure. I have been to parts of the US where parents of children with disabilities band together to get their needs met even if their interventions are different. Let's accept that people may or may not choose to embark on an ABA program for many reasons. I am not going to stop ABA for my kid but if my neighbour down the road feels another intervention works for her kid, it should not preclude us from working together. Ultimately we need to advocate for better trained assistants in the classroom, educated teachers who are not quick to throw their arms up in the air and ABA assistants for families such as ours who have chosen a proven method for their kids. These kids grow up very quickly and they need options and for most of us, private school may not be affordable or an option.
Lis LouwrierParticipantDear Barb,
Thank you for your post. You said it so well. In our own experience, there have been tears of joy and pain over the years but we have seen many gains in the 8 years our son has been in program. It is a work in progress but ABA and the skilled consultants involved in our son's progress have made a huge difference in his life and in our life.
My heart aches for new families because I know the pain they feel and the energy it takes to start a program. Believe and persevere, in time you will see gains and cry when you need to. There is no shame in that. Not everyone recovers (my son did not) but starting a program and sticking with it allows families to recover other gifts and time together that might have otherwise been lost.
Wishing all peace at Passover and Easter.
Lis LouwrierParticipant2 Line therapists needed in Victoria BC.
A well established ABA team in Victoria BC requires 2 line therapists to work with our soon to be 11 year old son starting May 2011. This is a rare opportunity as many of our therapists stay with our family for 3-4 years.
2 shifts a week are required as well as team meetings once a month with our consultant, Kathryn Theroux. A minimum of one year committment is required. Individuals interested in sports (floor hockey, ice hockey, swimming and roller blading), art and humour (most important with a pre-teen) should apply directly to louwrier@shaw.ca. Experience is preferred but qualified candidates with degree in psychology, education and sport-related fields are encouraged to apply.
Many thanks
