Brent JordanParticipant
It is my understanding that the Ministry of Education provides $16,000 to the school district for each kid with an autism diagnosis. Can anyone tell me what happens to those funds if we pull our kid from school and home school him? Do these funds come available to the family to provide necessary therapy/support/curriculum? If we switch schools does this funding transfer/follow to the next school? I can be contacted at btefzb@shaw.ca or 604-916-7933.
Brent JordanParticipantTo Heather re: New West School District (post Sept. 14th)
Heather,
I am in the exact same situation in the Coquitlam School District and am at the point of considering whether to pull our son from school rather than go forward in a situation that we feel is quite bad for him.
Please contact me at btefzb@shaw.ca or call at 604-916-7933.
We are at our wits end and any information you have learned would be appreciated but your posting did not provide any contact info.
Sincerely,
Brent Jordan
Brent JordanParticipantTodd,
What I heard him say was that non-verbal plus a diagnosis would be a slam dunk and he likely would not charge anything. My son is not quite 4 and is verbal thanks to nearly 2 years of ABA therapy so far. I wished I had asked him that question. I also wished I'd asked the group last night, how many had applied and been rejected or applied and had to go through hoops before getting accepted.
I agree that calling him makes sense but I would still like to hear from other's who have gone down this road as if there is one thing I have learned on the journey that is autism, the more you know, the better you are able to ask the right questions. If there is one thing that was clear last night, he does not know much about autism.

Brent JordanParticipantI am hoping to get some advice on filing a T2201 Disability Certificate with Revenue Canada. I attended a meeting last night of the North Shore Autism Group and had the fear of Revenue Canada instilled in me by the speaker. I assumed that having the T2201 filled in by our doctor was enough. Can anyone provide me with advice on what should go in with this application? Can anyone tell me what to be careful about or to avoid? Has anyone been rejected and if so, did you ultimately get accepted and what did you have to do to get over the government hurdles. I don't want to mess this up, but the other side of the coin is, I can't really afford to pay last night's speaker $1,500 to help me file this form when I need that money for my son's therapy. Please e-mail me at btefz@telus.net
Thanks

Brent JordanParticipantTHERAPIST NEEDED IN COQUITLAM TO JOIN OUR ABA TEAM
We are looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated individual to work with our 3 year old, high functioning autistic son. He is a fun loving, clever, sweet natured, verbal little boy who has been receiving ABA therapy at home for 13 months. He has made significant progress through the dedicated effort of his therapists, consultant and family.
This is an opportunity to make a real difference in a little boy's life. If you interested in working with children and are looking to gain experience in ABA therapy, this is your chance. Experience is not necessary as training will be provided both up front and on an ongoing basis.
Our ABA consultant is Alak Majumdar of Miles of Smiles Educational Services Inc. Alak is a local consultant which provides the added benefit of regular contact each month through overlap training sessions and team meetings.
This is not a posting for a summer job. To date our therapists have all been SFU students who have worked through the summer and school year although being a student is not a prerequisite. We ask for a one year commitment from our son's team members as we believe that consistency is important for him and that given the learning curve in becoming an ABA therapist it takes awhile for him to truly benefit from your skill set.

Brent JordanParticipantAs tax season is approaching I have a question which has likely been covered before but as a parent of a recently diagnosed child, everything is new to me. My question is, can my wife claim the cost of therapy provided in a home based program (above the level of government funding) as child care expense if the result is that my wife is able to work from home during therapy? On a logical level I think the answer should be yes but I am far from certain. My guess, however, is that someone else has already run in to this before me. Any information would be appreciated. Please e-mail me at btefz@telus.net.
Thanks.
