    Dear FEAT readers,

This is an invitation for all parents in the Burnaby area to meet up. We are a group of parents who would like to know and help one another in dealing and working better with the school board. This is the only effective way to help our children get the aide they need in school in the light of government cutbacks, school boards/staffs who are not open [yet does literally nothing to help the kids]; non-transparent and denies the support[yet grabs the funding].

Surrey has come this far and excels in having ABA support in the school. Can you imagine? It's just an imagination/ideal dream for parents like us but is already happening in Surrey. This does not happen without huge, endless effort from parents like Nancy.

Let us come together [despite our busy, tight schedule] and make Burnaby another good example for our kids in school.

    Meeting:
    Date: Saturday June 19th
    Time: 6:30-8pm
Venue: Metrotown Mall, Food Court [upper level] close to the Bay
    Near the fireplace.

Please forward this message to any parents/families you know who lives in the Burnaby area.

    Hope to see everyone there.

If you can't make it, you can still email me and join the group.

To parents who'll be attending tonight's workshop,

I wonder if anyone can kindly give me a ride to the nearest skytrain station tonight after the ABA workshop in Surrey [Dr. Glen Davies "News From the Field" Presented by the ABA Support Network 7-9pm].

    Thank you.

It is a great opportunity for those who is thinking of hiring an Occupational Therapist or for parents like me who has no extra to spend on one. Apart from the topic, it is also a great time to meet with other parents and socialize with people who understand.

    Cheers.

Hi. Sorry, it's me again. Does anyone know of any experienced law firms that handle estate planning for families like ours? I've already had 2 other parents asking if I had received any info but I hadn't. Please help us if you do know of any.

Your goodwill will help us ensure we make ours a good will. ^V^

    Thanks a million!

Burnaby Association For Community Inclusion [BACI] is a support group in Burnaby.

    Address: BACI Family Gathering Place
7716 Royal Oak Avenue, Burnaby, BC V5J 4K4

    Tel: 604-323-1328

Like ASBC, BACI holds a meeting once a month on topics relevant to our needs and is a great place to socialize. Its advantage is that the meeting is often held on Saturday evenings which is perfect for those who work.

It is not the first time when I heard parents asking the question, ¡°Should I tell others about my child?¡± Be it ASD, Asperger¡¯s, normally the intangible.

Well, if we perceive the question more deeply, we don¡¯t have to ask our professional service providers. In Canada, with a huge variety of races – it depends greatly on our roots, culture, concepts, beliefs, faith, people who surrounds us, and so on..and ah…I almost forgot, our true being.

Most of our beautiful children…whom our Ministry now categorizes as ¡°Youth and Child with Special Needs¡± have many problem behaviors. And because their so-called ¡®special needs¡¯ cannot be determined instantly by the naked eyes, they are often perceived as ¡®problematic¡¯, mischievous, and we the parents are often being stared at as if we cannot teach our children a thing.

We live in an apartment, and so we need to use the elevator daily. My 4-year-old boy with autism just loves jumping in the elevator. And God knows how hard I tried to stop, redirect, [any other terms, you just name it] him from doing so. And with an 18-months old sibling, boy how were they reinforcing one another!

When I was lucky, there would be some Caucasians using the elevator. Politely, they smiled and say, ¡°Wow…they just can¡¯t wait to go.¡± Or ¡°Are you excited to go out?¡± things like that.

Well, during some not-so-lucky times, I met with another Asian lady [like myself] who was there with her 7 year old boy. While I was busy hushing my baby to stop the jumping [in her stroller], the lady actually took over my role to teach my boy. Most others would simply stare as if their eyeballs would fall out.

The above is just an example most if not all of us face daily. It is a part of our lives ¨C where no one else understands.

So, probably if we want to relay the message, the hardest thing is ¡°How to tell others….¡±

The BC Centre for Ability in Kingsway, Burnaby actually runs a series of interesting workshops and this is one of them. ¡°Talking to Others about your child…How to communicate challenges, celebrate victories and manage insensitivities.¡± Those interested can call the office to register 604-451-5511.

Most of the time we do our best to help our children, but as parents, we need help too.
