"Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity."
    Martin Luther King

Indeed I have had great insights from the lecture in NorthShore on Monday by Jean Lewis. Thank you. How I wish every parent could be there to get the knowledge.

I have learned that in order to advocate for my child in the school system:
    1. Priority:
I must be clear with my goals. And that is, to ensure that my child has equal rights to free education and that there is a well-trained-staff who knows what he/she is doing to help my child get the best out of school.

    2. Focus and clear.
I need to be focused on my goals. There should be no, absolutely no negotiation when it comes to my child's rights as a human being to get access to education like every other child. As the parent, only I alone, have the right to advocate for my child. No one else can tell me what I should/could do or not do.

    3. Persistent
I must have all the knowledge out there to help my child, and the best to date we have now is only "Hewko". [I'm actually amazed that more than 15 families have asked for Mike Hancock's presentation handouts on "Your Child's Legal Rights"…and that focuses on Hewko]. My child has ABA at home; and there will be no compromise for that in school. Also, there is no shortcuts. Be smart and know the law; but also never stop advocating for my child's rights.

**I wish I had all these qualities back then; for I would not have wasted 3 years of my child's life. Anyway, it is better late than never.

Unfortunately, there wasn't any handouts that night that I could share. But we did receive a 4-pages notes on 'Hewko'. If you'd like a copy, I could email you one when I've scanned it.

    Hi Sharon.
For a laminate machine, you could easily get an affordable one at Walmart. I got mine for $30. However, the laminate sheets are very expensive. The best bargain I found was at Staples, 100 sheets [per pack] for $80.
    Hope this helps.

    Dear parents,
If you did not get a chance to attend North Shore's presentation on "Your Child's Legal Rights in the BC School System : The School Act and the Hewko Decision by Mike Hancock [parent and lawyer] but would like to read the handouts, please email me. I'm happy to send you a scanned copy of it. But please allow one day or two.

Also, I am a member of a group of parents in Burnaby who would like to advocate for ABA-trained aide for our kids in the school.

My son has improved a lot after 9-months of ABA under a great consultant and a great team [of course, I'm a great mother too! ^V^]. But without a proper ABA-trained aide in school, it would jeopardize my son – not only his education, but his life as well. Therefore I humbly urge you to join our effort. Even if you're not residing in Burnaby, we will always welcome you.

    Thank you.

    Hi Stacey,
I truly understand how you feel.

My preschooler cried and wouldn't want to go to his preschool last October. When I saw the class, I knew instantly. It was Halloween. The decor was too much for our little one.

On another occassion, it's about our CD player. He used to love listening to his toddler songs. Until one day, he simply screamed and cried and would not let us turn on the CD player. I took it away [my first mistake] and until today, it is banned. And I could not figure out what went wrong.

Although it's been for a week, probably if you can't figure out what triggered his fear – we can at least comfort him and reassure him you're there with him in the living room/kitchen. And like ABA programs, be with him in the living room for a short time, play his favorite toy…and then slowly lenghten the time you spent in the living room.

My mistake regarding the CD player [still banned] has reminded me that even when he cried over something, I'd just ignore and walk away. Pay no attention to his cries. The more attention I present [positive or negative, the more he reacts to it].

Of course, it might sound cold, but I would ignore his closing his eyes [so long as he's not hurting himself] and be with him in the feared places. Do activities that he really likes together and pretend he does not have behaviors [closing eyes]…and maybe he will be more relaxed. And yes, he's only 3. He needs lots of hugs and cuddles.^V^

On top of that, what did your consultant say?

Was it the sound of blender/ventilator in the kitchen? Or was he bitten by bugs, etc?

    Hope he's better now.

No matter what you're trying, please know that we're all here for you and for each other.

    Sweet dreams.

    Dear parents/users of FeatBC,

The 2011 Budget Consultation is approaching real soon – this Wednesday, Sept 15th. Has anyone been able to book an appointment to speak about the budget cut in school funding for our children? If yes, please share on this website about your time, so that other parents could join as a group to show them [the provincial government] that we are all here for our children.

The SCDP advocates [Supported Child Development Program] has booked a time at 7:35pm [they have 10 minutes to present their speech]. Unfortunately, the group does not touch on the funding cut to school support.

Thank you. Like the saying goes, 'Together we are strong'.

Please pass this on to as many families as possible, and interested parties such as MLAs, daycares, preschools, after-school care, etc.

    MEETING ¨C SEPTEMBER 13th
    Dear Families,
We are the proud parents of a child with special needs. Her name is Kate. She is 3 years old and
has Down syndrome. Our daughter is one of hundreds of children across the Lower Mainland on
a waitlist with Supported Child Development Program (SCDP) for extra staffing support. This
waitlist and the lack of services make us also very worried parents.
Are you in the same situation? Are you a worried parent of a child with special needs? Is your
child on waitlist with SCDP? If so, we strongly recommend you to attend this meeting on
    September 13th.
The SCDP provides consultation and staffing support so children with special needs can be
included in childcare settings from daycare to preschool and out-of-school care. Currently, this
program is not meeting the needs of far too many children and their families, due to insufficient
funding from the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD).
Over the past six years, the number of children requiring support from the Burnaby SCDP has
increased by over 100% (from 123 children in 2004, to 275 in March 2009!). Consultants now
have an average caseload of 49 children each while the provincial standard for caseloads is 25-35
children. It is our understanding that other regions are facing the same challenges. The increasing
strain on the SCDP coupled with a significant budget shortfall is causing waitlists to grow.
Consequently, many children ¨C including yours ¨C will remain on a waitlist for services. In our
daughter¡¯s case, she is number 62 on a waitlist for extra staffing support at her daycare. Specific
to daycares, there has been little movement on the waitlist for staffing support over the past 2
years. These numbers leave us with little hope for change or service at a time when it will most
    benefit Kate.
If we want our children to be a part of the community when they grow up, this is where we need
to start. Our children deserve to have the opportunity to develop to their highest potential amongst
their peers in the community. The SCDP ensures a safe and inclusive environment but they need
the funding to be able to do this, therefore, we need to let our voices be heard and bring these
    issues to the forefront.
Families need to come together on this issue. We encourage you in this time of urgency to
stand up and be counted. Please join us on Monday September 13, 2010 to find ways to let
the provincial government know how very important it is that they work to increase the
funding to the SCDP and the impact it has on families like ours who are sitting at home
    waiting for support.
    Our kids can¡¯t wait anymore!!

    Sincerely¡two proud but worried parents,
    Wendy Seet and Marc Adams
