    Re: child psychologist

We contacted BC Psychological Association and asked for child psychologists who do those tests. They found several names, and then we chose one based on price (which varied significantly among them) and availability to give us appointment very soon (it was urgent for us, too). If you would like the name of this person, you can e-mail me privately (ivanovic@telus.net).

    Otherwise,

    BC Psychological Association contact info:
Suite 202, 1755 West Broadway, Vancouver
    Referral Service: 604-730-0522
    Toll free: 1.800.730.0522

    I hope this will help.

    Criminal Record Check

Just a little addition to all that was said so far, once a therapist has the record check done, it can be photocopied and copies could be used by all her/his families. (My social worker told me that copies are ok.)

I need some clarifications of the current situation.

    1. In the post that cites Linda Reid's comments on treatment and funding for autism (by the way, what is the source of these comments and where can it be found?) she says the Government is already meeting all needs of autistic children and their families. Does it mean that another low suit will be needed just to proove that it is not so?

    2. What is the practical value of the latest court ruling: does the court have the power to force Government to comply with its ruling and how long would it take, years?

I hope someone with better understanding of the Canadian justice system and the common law can respond to my questions.

    Thanks,

Re: The Community Living Transition Steering Committee

Thank you Nancy for the link to the Community Living Transition Steering Committee.

I looked briefly through the information at the web site and I cannot see how it represents us, parents of children with autism. I saw only one member of that committee who is a parent of a young child with a "developmental disability".

Also, this Committee had public presentations in Richmond and Burnaby earlier this month, but we (or at least I) didn't know about it. Who attended them?

Our government keeps refusing to understand that autism is treatable and that autistic persons are capable of making permanent progress when they receive proper medical treatment at the early age. What they tell us is, "Forget your hopes, give up your efforts, your child is disabled for life. But, we will still give you some money for your child, because we want you to think we care."
    That hurts.

    Re: Picture Cards

We found good cards for several programs in Teaching Things on Still Creek dr. in Burnaby. Each set costs around $6 – $8. We just needed to cover the words with white labels to hide them (because we needed pictures only). For some other programs we used photographs or cards that we made ourselves.

It may seem hard, but it's not impossible to obtain required documentation regarding the "Multi-disciplinary assessment and diagnosis." According the MCFD Guidelines revised on July 22, if your child has diagnosis of autism spectrum from a pediatrician or child psychiatrist (and I understand you have), then you need assessments from psychologist and SLP. These could take lots of time through the health system, but privately you can obtain them in a short time. It is an extra cost, but it's worth, in my opinion.

If you live in Burnaby and run ABA for your child could you please send me an e-mail. My e-mail address is ivanovic@telus.net. I would like to talk to you about getting money from the Government.

    Thanks

I would like to check with you some information regarding government
funding for the treatment of autistic children.

I was told by a social worker in Burnaby MCF office, that our daughter,
now 4, was eligible for KTY program, and that we would be "helped out"
with our home ABA program using the KTY funding. However, they will
first serve a number of children who are older and who will lose their
eligibility by the fall (and for whom they will set up a "program").
Only then our daughter will start receiving some funding and only for a
6 month period. I was also told that funding that the preschool is
receiving for extra staff for her comes from KTY funds.

I would like to hear your opinion and information. I am not sure if
what I was told is reasonable and satisfactory.
