    PLEASE REPLY IF YOU CAN:

    Dear FEATers,

I am again posting this because I haven't gotten many answers and, I've had about ten other families ask me to pass on the information to them. If anyone had information regarding Kindergarten in the Vancouver School District could you PLEASE take the time to fill me in.

I am in the midst of finding my way through choosing a school that is appropriate for her.

I spoke on the phone yesterday with Sabrina and she said that posting here would be the *best way* of getting HONEST information regarding schools.

I would like to know which school your child
attends and if you like it or not.
I want to hear BOTH good and bad.

Simon Fraser is in my district, Edith Cavell is in my ex-husband's, I've been told that Mount Pleasant is good, but for what reason, I have not yet been told. (I've put in a cross boundry application for there.)

Please e-mail me if you have ANY advice that you could share with me. It would be oh-so helpful.

    Thanks So Much,
    Cathy

    Wow.
Just watched Jean and everyone try their best in the Senate.
Thank you all for your amazing everythings.
(Gosh some of those questions were silly: emergency rooms?)

It reminded me of so many things.
Is there a way to re-watch it?
I'd like to send it to a few people…
    (scissorhappy@shaw.ca)

We all have to keep fighting.
We just have to keep going.

Just a reminder about "self care."
We all also have to take care of ourselves.
Get massages, take hot baths (once the water is clear,)
buy yourself new slippers and a cozy sweater.

If we can't stand stong and clear, we can't support our children.
And once again, thank you Jean.

I can't imagine Autism without you.

    Staying dry in Vancouver,
    Cathy

Jon Stewart put on "Night Of Too Many Stars: An Overbooked Benefit For Autism Education." It was two hours long, very funny, and broadcast live on the web last night. It raised a lot of money! (I couldn't find the exact numbers yet…)

There are videos up on the site:

    Thank You Jon Stewart!

Still looking for a new therapist!

We are looking for a resposible, dedicated, and creative person to join our (most excellent,) well established, home based- Lovaas-style Applied Behavior Analysis program (an intensive behavioral program where the children are systematically taught what other children learn intuitively from their family and peers.)

Our four year old daughter is low on the spectrum, and is very verbal, gentle, affectionate, and amazing. Her therapy is fascinating, and her progress is swift. We are currently working under the guidance of the EAP (the Early Autism Project.)

Previous experience with autistic children would be an asset but is not required. Initial training will be provided by our senior therapist along with follow up sessions.

These positions will appeal to people with an interest in psychology, education, special education, speech/language pathology or any other career involving children and clinical therapy. This is a fantastic opportunity to make an impact on a child's life while acquiring great training and job experience.

All applicants must have strong play skills, a positive attitude, lots of energy and patience, be good multi-taskers, and should be encouraging, enthusiastic, and responsible. You also need to be able to take constructive feedback and implement it immediately.
Energy and a positive attitude is a must.

As a therapist, you need to be able to commit to
two or three shifts a week (the shifts are two or three hours long,) plus attend biweekly team meetings on Thursday evenings from 6:30-7:30, periodic workshops, and also be able to commit to the team for one year.

Weekend and evening shifts are also available, so you should easily be able to work around your university schedule.

Only apply if you are a natural at relating to children.
A current criminal record check will be required,
and salary is negotiable based on experience.

We live in central Vancouver near Main and Broadway.

Please e-mail resumes to scissorhappy@shaw.ca with "Therapist Position" as the subject, and/or call us at: (604)709-6003.

Looking Forward To Hearing From You-
and…honestly, I can promise that this is going to be rewarding and fun.

    Thanks,
    Cathy

    Hi Again Busy Featers,

I posted last week about needing some advice on how to begin to approach the concepts of "personal space/strangers/safety" with my 4 year old daughter, and I still need help.

Three issues need to be addressed:

    #1-
The concept of "strangers" and body safety, privacy, etc…
Along with how to yell or ask for help.

    #2-
    How to get someone's attention.
My daughter is pointing quite near to faces, and is grabbing at strangers' clothing from behind. She needs to learn to use her voice, keep a fair distance away, and also to get within someone's eyesight before or while she is speaking.

    #3
    Street Safety
I fear that if I were not with her, she would NOT stop at a curb,
and at this point she is getting really good at NOT listening to my requests.

What kind of books, social stories, videos, or strategies have you used to move your child through this phase?

    Any input would be great.
If you wanna e-mail instead of post, I'm at: scissorhappy@shaw.ca

    Thanks SO Much,
    Cathy
