    ** Calling all parents of school-aged children ** – really – don't be shy….

Hi everyone – your silence has been deafening! Please take a minute to consider responding to this post if it applies to you.

As many of you know, the North Shore parent support group presents a yearly talk for parents about navigating the school system. Many of you have probably heard this information either through North Van. or another parent support group.

As one of the parents who has helped coordinate that presentation in the past, I'm wondering if anyone out there (a) has had direct experience with the s. 11 process and (b) is prepared to share those experiences. I think it would be helpful for parents in different districts to know what strategies work best where they live. If you have confidentiality concerns we would certainly respect that too, though obviously one goal is to tailor the presentation, while another is to be able to share stories as much as possible if parents are willing.

If you feel you have a story to share that would help other parents, please contact me privately at andreafinch@shaw.ca. Thanks in advance for paying it forward to all of us who are getting ready for "Back to School" season.

    Cheers,
    Andrea Finch

** Info Wanted re: Video Technology **

Hi everyone – we are looking for advice from parents or anyone else who can recommend a video sytstem that is good for both recording our at-home ABA sessions and sending video footage to others for review. The current machine we have is borrowed, older and requires the viewer to have the entire machine to be able to see the tape. Also wondering if anyone has tried renting? I hope it goes without saying that while we want something that works, we'd like the least expensive option.

Anyone with input, please e-mail me privately at andreafinch@shaw.ca with "Video info." in the Subject line.

    Thanks all!

** WANTED TO BUY – Star Wars Lego or other **

Hi all – we are wanting to "teach" Star Wars to our 8 year old and are looking for any of the following: Star Wars Lego; Star Wars books outlining the plot or characters; any other age-appropriate related material. Second-hand and well-used is fine; reasonably priced would be great! If you can help, please e-mail me privately at andreafinch@shaw.ca.

    Thanks,
    Andrea

We are looking for the game "Battleship". Does anyone have a version of this they'd be prepared to sell or otherwise part with?

If so, please e-mail me privately at andreafinch@shaw.ca. We're located in North Vancouver.

    Thanks!

    Link to B.C. Government announcement

Further to Todd's earlier post, here is a link to the News Release – http://www2.news.gov.bc.ca/news_releases_2009-2013/2009CFD0003-000348.htm – if this doesn't work, it should be on the government's website.

The gist is: the funding for those who run home-based ABA programmes remains in place. The government-contracted EIBI programmes, which apparently serve 70 individuals in 8 B.C. communities at a cost of $5 million per year, will be terminated as of January 2010.

I think one of the key pieces for those of us running home-based ABA programmes is the move away from Direct Funding to Invoice Payment – here is the excerpt:

    · Effective October, 2009, the ministry will begin moving families from Direct Funding to Invoice Payment in the Autism Funding Programs in order to improve accountability and increase efficiency.

o Direct Funding: Families manage their child’s funds and pay service providers.

o Invoice Payment: Families choose the service but the ministry manages the child’s funds and pays service providers when it receives an invoice.

Given that the government wants to start moving in this direction next month (ie. starting in a couple of weeks), I would really appreciate either public posts to this board, or messages sent to me privately at andreafinch@shaw.ca, from any FEAT families who can offer perspective or commentary on whether this has ever arisen in the past, and if so, what if anything was discussed.

    Thanks all,
    Andrea
