This is a reminder post regarding the upcoming FEAT BC lecture at S.F.U.
'Autism Treatment Evaluation Lecture: HOW TO EVALUATE AUTISM TREATMENTS: Make sure your child gets what works!'
"This upcoming lecture at SFU by Dr. Sabrina Freeman is about how to navigate your way through the maze of autism treatments out there and to ensure that your child is safeguarded ineffective treatments that exist in abundant supply in the autism treatment universe. What every well informed parent needs to know is how to evaluate — on their own — the science behind any given autism treatment method. In other words, rather than relying on the opinions of others, it is far better for parents to know the basic scientific principles that make for a truly informed and savvy autism treatment consumer and advocate for their child. This is especially important in the world of autism treatment where there seems to be an annual crop of purported autism treatments. Without a reference point that is grounded in the fundamentals of the scientific method, parents are essentially traveling without a compass. How can parents choose treatments that are most likely to be effective, rather than those most likely to be a waste of precious time and resources? To this end, and to empower parents in their dealings with so-called autism "experts," Dr. Freeman will present a two-hour lecture at Simon Fraser University. Everyone who attends will receive a free copy of the lecture video for his or her home library – the lecture will be videotaped."
Location: Simon Fraser University, Academic Quadrangle Room #K9500
This FEAT BC lecture is on Saturday, February 28, 2004

FEAT BC AdminKeymasterOn Monday (02/09/04) CKNW's Bill Good Program interviewed Dr. Sabrina Freeman, author of 'Science for Sale in the Autism Wars: Medically necessary autism treatment, the court battle for health insurance and why health technology academics are enemy number one."
Dr.Freeman's book exposes, in well-documented detail, the dishonest advocacy research B.C.'s Ministry of Health commissioned for their defense in the landmark Auton case. The B.C. Supreme Court ruled that health policy academics at U.B.C. had produced "obviously biased" research for the court hearings. Ignoring the court's troubling finding of fact, the B.C. Office of Health Technology has nevertheless gone on to publish and distribute — worldwide — its negative and highly misleading report on Lovaas Autism Treatment.
The radio interview is available on the FEAT BC server at this address:

FEAT BC AdminKeymasterTo all parents of children with autism.
Seven years ago, Sabrina Freeman spent many hours of her time on the phone with me, patiently answering my questions, and calmly, methodologically explaining what the science was behind Lovaas ABA treatment. This invaluable information educated me and gave me the tools to make the decision to start a Lovaas ABA program and to be a proper advocate for my daughter. It is the best and most important decision I have ever made. Thank you Sabrina.
Realizing just how many parents need this information, and realizing just how little time everyone who is running a Home Treatment Program has, Sabrina has prepared a lecture. "How to Evaluate Autism Treatments – Make Sure Your Child Gets What Works." I heard this lecture at the FEAT meeting in December. This easy-to-understand, comprehensive, and straight-to-the-point lecture will give you the tools with which to question the other kinds of treatment that you will come across, heck even the other kinds of treatment which tried to snake their way onto this very web-site.
Understanding the science behind the treatment, being able to discern data from anecdotes, being able to understand control group, peer-reviews, scientific ethical standards, and "n" values, are just a few of the points which Sabrina defined so well and clearly at her lecture. Sabrina's down-to-earth, straight-talking approach is the best way to learn the science behind the Lovaas treatment, and it will enable you to respond to any nay-sayer that crosses your child's path. I encourage all parents to attend. Attending this lecture will save you countless hours of reading and cross-referencing – a great opportunity for you all. See you there!

RE: Forum rules
**********************************************Hello FEAT BC,
In response to recent posts to the forum and membership requests, the FEAT BC Discussion Board rules have been revised to explicitly prohibit advertising by professionals. We ask everyone to please review and cooperate with this important rule (reproduced below).
3) Professionals such as lawyers, autism consultants, advocates, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologists, physiotherapists etc., are not allowed to advertise directly or indirectly using their professional designation or business contact information on this website. Existing autism therapists advising of their capacity to add families or those seeking employment as therapists i.e., paraprofessionals, are the only exceptions to this rule. The Board Administrator of the FEAT of BC discussion forum will make the final determination.

RE: Forum rules
******************************************In view of recent posts made to the FEAT BC discussion board, this note is a reminder of rules that govern participation in the group.
This is not an appropriate forum to discuss unsubstantiated treatments for autism, including dietary interventions such as the wheat, gluten, and casein free diet.
The FEAT BC Discussion Group has been designed to discuss any topic relevant to home-based A.B.A. programs (including Government funding and school issues). When we use the term A.B.A., we mean discrete-trial-based interventions (also referred to as "applied behaviour analysis" or "Lovaas" behavioural treatment) for autism and related disorders.
With respect to lawyers that are members of this group, we very much welcome and appreciate your opinions and thoughts regarding the ongoing legal battles we are fighting against government on behalf of children with autism. The contribution of robust discussions on legal topics helps many members of the group, but we ask that posts please exclude advertising for professional services.
Other professionals such as autism consultants, speech and language pathologists, accountants, and so on, are similarly not permitted to advertise professional services on the FEAT BC board. Autism therapists and soon-to-be therapists i.e., paraprofessionals, are the only notable exception.
Thank you all for your understanding and cooperation in this matter and for making the forum such a valuable meeting place.
