Have you called ASBC (Autism Society of BC)? They may be able to help you out? 604-434-0880. They have meetings every month I believe but feel free to call them and they may have info on support groups in your neighborhood.
Personally I have gone through FHAN's diagnosis and if you want to know more about it please email me at yipee@shaw.ca and I will be happy to give you my experience and tips that may help you out.
I am sort of in a similiar boat. My older ASD boy has a diagnosis and my younger son has been viewed as either gifted or ADHD. I am also persuing diagnosis with him. Interesting because I know that when as a mother you know and you have to convince someone that they need to assess him …it is not easy. Especially for me in the second round. I met someone on this chat board that told me her preschooler is verbally advanced and was diagnosed on the spectrum. That is why most ASD parents think I am over anxious. But I know that the assessment will truly help you focus on what he needs. So anyways, drop me a line and I can share with you some of the "pitfalls" and bewares you should know when going through the diagnosis process with FHAN.
Thx.

Will you attend the rally that is upcoming in March? I heard that it should be March 2nd. I want to be there to experience it and my be out there with husband and kids. I am going to post something on our school board if I can to get the word out.
That is the only way I see that we can do to show the people that we will not tolerate anymore. I know it will be hard to have them with me but my kids should know how many people care about them.Talk to you later.

Did you ask your OT or medical professional to write a letter of recommendation? When they do that usually the funding unit will make a decision to include it if I am not wrong.
BTW, I have heard of one case where whipping cream became an expense because that child had sensory problems so they needed to run fingers in whip cream to satisfy his need. That calmed him down.
But try that and see if will help because they need to know if it is related and why so? Does that make sense?

Happy birthday to Mr. P. Love your advice to Kelly and it is good and useful.I believe that there is a small population out there that is hoping to make a difference to our kids because the reward of seeing the kids succeed far outweighs the salary.
The best thing your potential therapist should have is a heart because what they build together with your kids goes a long way if they care.
Can you save Mr. M a slice?
Thx so much for your sharing on Mr. P. Makes me cry when I read most of your posts and it sure gives me hope for the future.

Sorry but I better post another msg. I assumed that you are a mom and I believe Kelly is a name for men or women so pls forgive me if I called you a mom if you are actually the dad.
I usually try to write "parent" but sometimes I will end up putting mom. There are a lot of caring and giving dads out there too.

I am a mother of a 7 year old boy that is PDD but still under the spectrum and I feel for you. Although I cannot go to Langley to give you hug I hope to offer you a virtual one right now.
My familly knows first hand about frustration. My son was misdiagnosed and we went through 3 assessments to be able to get the appropriate diagnosis. Like most parents we often feel the guilt as I have most often felt in the same dilemna. Sadly this scenario you describe happens frequently because there is not enough money to keep these therapist/consultants around. Of course a courtesy of a call before a no show would be appreciated but I guess everyday now I learn to take a deep breath and tell myself, did I try my best? Then I have done the best for my son.
Life is full of ups and downs as a parent with a child that is autistic. I just ask that you never look down on yourself and never think any less of yourself. You are your son's voice and you fight for him because you love him. We all know this because we are either walking in the same path or we just are a few steps further ahead.
Instead I encourage you to focus on giving him your love, attention. Are you able to sub in on some of his shifts so that you can be in the loop until you find another person? I know it is challenging because we try to have everything else done. But someday your son will remember the mom that never gave up and not the one that could not find a theraptist.
We can only focus on what we can do to help them. One thing I encourage all FEATers is to talk to our politicians and our MPs about our children. They want us to go away because it is our children that need help and at the end of the day we are just another file number to most people.
I know that there is a rally planned for March so please look out for info on the FEAT board and take a step to fight for your son's right to be able to have autism treatments covered by healthcare.
The reason you and I are struggling to keep these therapist and going through what we do is because we just can't offer enough money to keep these people and the funding is just not enough. It is more of an appetizer I think ha.
OK…I can ask around with some others to see if they know anyone in Langley that can help out. Email me if you still need to share. I hope that this email has encouraged you.
Someone once said to me:
"You were chosen to bring up this child in your home because it takes strength, vigiliance (spelling?), love, patience, courage, advocacy skills, and most of all acceptance to do what you do" We all want the "average child but I realize I have a real gem in my son. He has taught me a whole new way to look at the world. Your son is blessed to have you as his mom. chin up !

Does anyone have info on how the Hewko case is applicable to Burnaby School District? In other words how does it apply to us. I have read some of the highlights of the case but I thought it was in Abbotsford???
I mean was there a "ruling" that the Hewko case is now directly applicable and related to the school districts in ALL of Lower Mainland or it is rather a guideline for us to "negotiate" with our school? Thx.Deleted UserMemberNeed Clipboards?
I am selling quite a few clipboards and the cardboard file slot-things that they go in. Please email abateam@gmail.com if you are interested. We are located in Langely.
