Dione CostanzoParticipant
Dr. Glen Davies "News From the Field" Presented by the ABA Support Network
At our June 8 meeting, Dr. Glen Davies, Director of ABLE Developmental Clinic, will present on 2 important new developments in the field and leave time open for general questions and answers.
1. NAC National Standards Report
2. Pacific Autism Family Center
3. Questions and Answers
1. National Standards Report:
The National Autism Center is a not-for-profit center for autism in the United States committed to evidence-based practice. In September 2009 the NAC published their exhaustive review of the treatment literature for children with autism spectrum disorder. This review relied on the expertise of nearly 100 respected researchers in the field of autism, including Gina Green and Tristan Smith, and reviewed more than 7000 studies including over 1000 for detailed analysis. They rated studies on pre-established criteria of scientific merit and described the level of evidence for each of the common and not so common treatments for ASD, classifying them into the categories of: Established Treatments, Emerging Treatments and Unestablished Treatments. See how ABA compares to other approaches. Find out what level of evidence there is for ABA (and other treatments) for children of different ages, diagnostic classifications, specific skills increased, and behaviors decreased.
2. Pacific Autism Family Center:
Two years ago Premier Campbell announced the creation of a center of excellence in autism in British Columbia and committed $20 million. Another $14 million has been committed by private individuals to make this center a reality. Dr. Davies has been participating on an advisory group and as an invitee for discussion of specific topics. He will discuss the rationale for the center, progress towards building the structure, progress towards operational development, and an idea of potential benefits and risks.
3. Questions and Answers:
Dr. Davies would be pleased to respond to questions regarding the Autism Standards, Pacific Autism Family Center, or any other topics of interest.Date: June 8, 2010

If anyone is interested in connecting with her please email me dionec@shaw.ca
Thanks

Dione CostanzoParticipantOnce again let's look to the American's and what they are doing with health care reform (top of the news on CNN). Here is a story of parents and their struggle to get insurance for their son with autism:

Dione CostanzoParticipantABA in Schools Survey
brought to you by the ABA Support NetworkIf you haven't already filled out this very quick survey, please do so. So far, we've had 72 responses.
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/P37RTQM
It is difficult to make inferences about a district if less than 4 people respond. Below are districts with 4 or more responses:
Private School 5
Langley 4
Nanaimo 5
N.Vancouver 6
Qualicum 4
Surrey 19
Vancouver 7One thing that is consistent across the districts, is there is a fairly high level of satisfaction with the teachers accepting ABA. And a low level of satisfaction with the integration/support teachers.
So far, Qualicum is the winner of the high satisfaction award. Surrey is close behind. All other districts are significantly lower in satisfaction. Clearly, there are some districts getting the right idea and others who are fighting tooth and nail to block ABA in the schools. By April, we would like to give district results to parents who would like to advocate in their district. We will also help families connect with other families in their district.
There will also be a talk on ABA in the School Setting, on April 13. We can share some of the results of the survey. Nancy Walton will talk about how Surrey came about it's success and Sharon Baxter will show, through video examples, what ABA can look like in the classroom setting when a child has a consultant writing programs and an aide who is well trained in ABA.
PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW who is doing home based ABA with their school age child.
