Celebration of Life for Dr. Ivar Lovaas

    Save the Date – September 23, 2010 7-9pm

Lovaas, a distinguished professor of psychology at UCLA, a pioneer in the research and development of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy to treat children with autism, and the founder of the Lovaas Institute (http://www.lovaas.com), died on August 2nd at age 83.

Parents and professionals in BC will gather on this special evening to pay tribute to Dr Lovaas and review the history of his work and ABA as a treatment for autism.

Hear from the parents who founded FEAT of BC, brought ABA treatment into this province and continue to fight for universal access to science based treatment for all individuals who need it. Thanks to litigation by parents in the past we are able to access funding for autism services today.

Share your own story about what Lovaas and ABA has done for you and your family.

Dr. Glen Davies "News From the Field" Presented by the ABA Support Network

At our June 8 meeting, Dr. Glen Davies, Director of ABLE Developmental Clinic, will present on 2 important new developments in the field and leave time open for general questions and answers.

    1. NAC National Standards Report

    2. Pacific Autism Family Center

    3. Questions and Answers

    1. National Standards Report:

The National Autism Center is a not-for-profit center for autism in the United States committed to evidence-based practice. In September 2009 the NAC published their exhaustive review of the treatment literature for children with autism spectrum disorder. This review relied on the expertise of nearly 100 respected researchers in the field of autism, including Gina Green and Tristan Smith, and reviewed more than 7000 studies including over 1000 for detailed analysis. They rated studies on pre-established criteria of scientific merit and described the level of evidence for each of the common and not so common treatments for ASD, classifying them into the categories of: Established Treatments, Emerging Treatments and Unestablished Treatments. See how ABA compares to other approaches. Find out what level of evidence there is for ABA (and other treatments) for children of different ages, diagnostic classifications, specific skills increased, and behaviors decreased.

    2. Pacific Autism Family Center:

Two years ago Premier Campbell announced the creation of a center of excellence in autism in British Columbia and committed $20 million. Another $14 million has been committed by private individuals to make this center a reality. Dr. Davies has been participating on an advisory group and as an invitee for discussion of specific topics. He will discuss the rationale for the center, progress towards building the structure, progress towards operational development, and an idea of potential benefits and risks.
    3. Questions and Answers:
Dr. Davies would be pleased to respond to questions regarding the Autism Standards, Pacific Autism Family Center, or any other topics of interest.
