Hello all,
For a PDF version of the report Andrew has listed go here:
http://www.parl.gc.ca/39/1/parlbus/commbus/senate/com-e/soci-e/rep-e/repfinmar07-e.pdf
I found the suggestion that folks with ASD be involved in the follow up and development processes (pages 15, 16, 19 and 20) to be positive. I do hope that such consultation is meaningful and comprehensive, as in many ways in the past, consultation has been cursory (or has ocured as an after thought… or it has simply not been part of the process).

Dave CollyerMemberHello Alexei,
CDSS hosts a parent's "story" regarding the use of ABA to help a child with Down syndrome develop some specific skills and manage some "problem behavior". There are, in addition, a few research articles (single subject case study but no large scale replicated RCT work) in the literature supporting the use of this approach with children with DS.
Our son has both DS and Autism and we have had some success helping him develop self help/care, communication and pre-academic skills via ABA strategies. In my expereience many community based programs for children of DS incorporate some elements of behaviorism

Dave CollyerMemberHi all,
Ontario seems to be expanding access and support for ASD in the schools.
http://lfpress.ca/newsstand/CityandRegion/2007/02/24/3661247-sun.html, LondonFreePress}
or if you prefer the G&M has the same story:
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20070223.wautismontario0223/BNStory/National/
I do worry that the result will be rather hit and miss as I suspect that OSTF is rather like our BCTF in that it's membership also lacks the experence, training and supervision in the design and delivery of ABA (and other) supports. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.
I would love to read the 34 reccomendations the panel generated. Does anyone have a link or a source?

Dave CollyerMemberHello Kandi,
I note that Warawa and Hiebert voted against it… but I was suprised to see my MP (Martin) voted for it. How odd!

Dave CollyerMemberHi Stephanie,
This of course is a very personal issue… No one can really tell you what to do or what is right for you. I guess you need to gauge your own "readiness" for another child.
I do want to point out that inspite of the challenges associated with raising a child with ASD there are also many moments of joy and happiness. We have a son with Autism and Down syndrome who is now 5 and half years old. We love him very much and he is a pleasure to be around. Don't get me wrong… he has his moments without doubt and requires more support, supervision and intensive eductional programs then some other children might need… but… he is our son and we offer all that we do out of love. He is going to be a very fine young man one day.
If I were not so old I think we would have more children… and we would love them regardless of genetics… .

Dave CollyerMemberHello Victoria based home program ABAers,
We have just finished interviewing and hiring a new "junoir" therapist. We recieved a large number of resumes in the process. As a result I have a small stack of resumes from interested applicants. Most I would describe as enthusiastic, and energetic but "green" in terms of direct experience (but with some related experience and course work from the UVic Psychology program). If anyone is hoping to build team "depth" by adding new members please fell free to contact me. I would be happy to pass on your contact information.

Dave CollyerMemberRecently I was informed that FEATBC and ASBC have jointly presented a synopsis of the Hewko ruling and have forwarded it to the Districts. If you are interested in this sort of thing my iDisk has some bandwidth left so go here: HEWKO SYNOPSIS
Dave CollyerMemberHi all,
I am going to take the Hewko ruling off of my iDisk given the traffic it has seen. Go here instead: http://www.courts.gov.bc.ca/jdb-txt/sc/06/16/2006bcsc1638err1.htm
Dave CollyerMemberHello JB,
If you still need it… I'll host a copy of the Hewko ruling for a short time here: HEWKO
My only copies are "web archives" and RTFs (sorry no word docs or PDFs). The copy here is in RTF (Rich text… word should open it as should Pages, NeoOffice etc…).
Dave.
