WANTED SENIOR THERAPIST – NEW WESTMINSTER (Queens Park Area)

We are looking a positive, energetic person to work with our funny, charming and affectionate 7-year-old son, William, who is in the first grade at school. He is very sociable and is a bright and eager learner.

William has made amazing gains in treatment over the last three years through ABA therapy under the local direction of experienced behavioural consultant, Gabrielle Stignant and senior consultant Michele Shilvock. He is doing well in school, has made friends, has just learned to swim, and is working on his yellow belt in karate.

Currently, we are focusing on refining his social skills primarily through peer and community activities. He generally does well one on one with his friends but struggles to balance his attention among a larger group and be flexible in playing with a group.

This position involves two to four shifts Monday, Wed, Thurs or Friday from 2:45-6:00 or possibly on Sunday mornings.

Our ideal candidate will be dependable and willing to commit to at least one year. (Most of our staff have stayed beyond one year due to their attachment to William).

The wage is within the market rate for senior therapists and will be based upon skill level and experience. Wages are paid upon receipt of therapist’s invoice by the parents as we know that waiting for funding from the government can be lengthy.

If you are responsible, energetic, creative, and motivated, we would like to hear from you. Please email Heather Burke at hburke@telus.net with your resume.

ABA Treatment has worked for us.

I wanted to share my story of hope as encouragement for parents struggling with their child being newly diagnosed with ASD.

My son William was first diagnosed when he was nearly four years old. When he was close to 3 years old, our preschool, upon meeting him, immediately said he would require an aid as he did not respond to the teacher's questions and would basically ignore her.

At four, he had sensory issues, did not like anything on his head, cried at loud noises, food aversions, temperature aversions, was not toilet trained, would not follow instructions. He was assessed as having an IQ in the borderline range (below the average range) and had personal self care skills of a 16 month old.

Upon receiving this information, I was devastated and cried a lot, but went to the Autism Society and decided to pursue treatment immediately. I hired a behavioural consultant and a team of therapists to do intensive ABA. The goal was 35 hours per week.

After two and a half years of intensive treatment, William has attended Kindergarten this year. He had a full time aide and has done remarkably well with support.

He has been invited to 13 birthday parties this year and is popular with his peers. He still has his social challenges and requires ongoing support in this area (ongoing treatment after school and half time SEA next year) but we are seeing steady improvements.

His teacher today told me, he is "very bright" (this is far from the results of the IQ testing 2.5 years ago). We are now told that he would benefit from more challenging material and is suggesting a grade 1/2 split for next year.

I know that I am very fortunate to have had such great results with William. It has been tough financially and professionally for me (career goals on hold) but I can say that the sacrifices have been completely worth it.

I am hoping that my story will be of some hope to others out there beginning their treatment. I remember Stella Hui from the Autism Society telling me her story about her son and his progress. She gave me hope when I was grieving and in shock about the diagnosis.

I wish you all the best.

    New Westminster School District

Has anyone has recent experience with the NW school district. Our son has just entered kindergarten and has full funding for an aide. Suddenly, we have been told by our principal that there is no specific aide assigned to our son. I am wondering how to handle this situation and to find out if this is unique to NW with funding cuts. I worry about alienating the school staff as they seem geniunely interested in assisting our son.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Heather (William's mom)
