Dear Anonymous: I guess it's each district union rep's interpretation of the collective agreement that makes for flexibility or lack thereof. At any rate, pardon my ignorance but since I probably have one and only kick at this cat I just want to make sure I include the requisite criteria in my Dr.'s letter. Does one need to be specific about why their child requires an SEA who has Lovaas protocol ABA training or is it sufficient to say that it's a medical necessity? Is the requirement Lovaas protocol education/training/experience or some combination thereof? I'm at a bit of a loss here, so any specifics (or examples) would be much appreciated. And oh, Mr. P's dad – those gramatically correct posts are ok but it's really the snippets of humor that are most enjoyable. Thanks 'anonymous' for your enlightenment.

Dear Anonymous: Thanks for that little tip about presenting the district with a Dr's note – that will hopefully be a loophole many of us have been looking for! Would you (or any other members who have done this) be able to share which district(s)this has been successful in? My understanding is that CUPE's degree of flexibility varies significantly from district to district and I can assure you they are fairly rigid out in Delta. I can be emailed at: ourhouse@direct.ca

    Thanks.

Hello all: Having a little trouble with the educational powers that be – nice for it to be happening in the last month of school.
    – Is it a parent's right to be on the school grounds at any time provided they give sufficient notice? I am wanting to be on the playground daily to 'observe' the aide and the lunchtime socialization program that is part of the IEP.
    – If a parent so chooses, could they send in a person of their choice to be with their child at lunchtime (on the school grounds)despite the fact there is a useless SEA assigned?
    – I get a sense there are families in other school districts that are able to get ABA therapists (non unionized/non SEA trained)into public schools to do the aide job…for those of you who are able to do this could you please explain HOW?? Thanks for your anticipated responses. E-mail me privately if you wish: ourhouse@direct.ca

Just wondering if any of you have attempted and been successful at claiming a portion of your home (ie. a therapy room) on your income taxes. E-mail me privately if you wish but other members would likely find this information useful too. ourhouse@direct.ca

    Thanks.

Response to Michelle: I found your post very ironic as there was a time when we were on a first name basis with one of the local plumbers…after the third time we stopped having to give him our address. We too tried to lock the door from the inside but our then 4 year old daughter couldn't pick the lock. We got those white child proof door knob covers that prevent children from opening the door because you need to squeeze and turn simultaneously. Our daughter could open it(with both hands)…and so could our company. I found them at London Drugs. Good luck!

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where we might locate some teaching materials on advanced emotions (disappointed, nervous, frustrated, etc.)…in particular children's books, workbooks, games. Thanks.

Well, well ,well. I must say I've read with great interest, the posts from the last several days. When one lives in a proverbial glass house whose mandate is not solely Lovaas ABA treatment one should consider carefully the act of advising others on the logistics of setting their stones in motion.

Can someone advise the date of FEAT's October workshop that is being presented by WEAP? It was advertised in ASBC's newsletter as October but can't seem to locate a flyer on the web-site for a specific date.

Hi Everyone: Just wondering if anyone would be willing to share some info with me. I am currently negotiating with a Sr. Therapist and would appreciate any feedback on how much families pay their sr.'s for the consultant facilitated in-home workshops. I have heard some pay at a decreased hourly rate and some pay a per diem. Please feel free to email me privately at: ourhouse@direct.ca

    Thanks in advance.

Hi Barbara: I'm so sorry to hear about Jeremy. I do know some parents who have children that have seizures and I'm sure they also have some knowledge about reputable pedicatric neurologists. I'd be happy to try and connect you with them if you haven't already been successful in finding one. Feel free to e-mail me at: ourhouse@direct.ca
