    We're unable to post names of confirmed registrants on the Discussion Board because discussion posts are published on the World Wide Web i.e., this forum is not a confidential medium.

    Regarding the therapists’ workshop, anyone whose registration form arrived at FEAT BC after the sign-up reached capacity will be contacted by phone to notify.

    Another thought to keep in mind on this subject: MCFD is not Revenue Canada. They are not connected in any way. MCFD is not going to care how you pay your therapists.

    I just have to add yet another thought. I think the information they are giving out is just to scare families off the individualized funding. If they can scare you off the I.F., then your more likely to take services from one of their crappy government service providers. Don't give in. It's worth it for your child to use individualized funding and get proper services.

    Regarding Employee vs Contractor

    I think most poeople running an ABA program have been faced with this confusion. There is a simple rule to determine if you are an Employer (with all the WCB obligations and such) or if you are buying contract services. The general rule is that if the worker is providing a service that can be done for multiple customers then they can be considered a contract worker. If they can only realistically work for you then you are their employer.

    For example, a typical therapist is providing 2-3 hours of work, 2-3 times per week per customer. If you are one of those customers then they are really working for you on a contract basis. The important point here is that they are able to deliver these services to another customer. (They do not necessarily have to be working for someone else though, just have the option).

    If you have a therapist working for you 5 days per week for 8 hours per day then the government would consider them to be your employee as there is no realistic opportunity for them to provide services to another customer. In this case you would have further obligations.

    I have never known a family who has a therapist working a 40 hour work week. In every family I've ever seen the therapists can be considered consultants. You can just pay them right out of your account and they are responsible to pay their own taxes and take care of their own deductions.

    Anna:

    You are not an employer. You are an individual buying
    services from individual contractors. Have each of your
    therapists and anyone else provide you with invoices for
    their services and pay the invoices. This is no different than
    doctors, lawyers, dentists or any other professional whose
    services you buy. You are buying, not employing. MCFD can
    get stuffed with their guidelines — they have no basis in
    reality.

    Hi!

    I am starting a ABA program for my
    daughter in
    July and I'm a little confused about some things.
    I recently read on the FEAT of BC classifieds that a parent was going
    to pay
    their therapists on a contract basis. I painstakingly went through all
    the
    guidelines from my MCFD package that stated that I must register as an
    Employer with Revenue Canada, WCB and check with my home insurance
    agent.
    My question is this:
    Can I pay my therapists a direct wage from my TRUST account or do I
    still
    have to go through the motions of being a registered 'employer' who
    does
    payroll and remittances through Revenue Canada?
    I already pay my ABA Consultant directly as well as my SLP.

    Any guidance would be appreciated.

    A Venture into Theory of Mind, "Mindblindness", Critical Thinking and Inferential Reasoning

    A "Theory of Mind" (or TOM, for short) is something that all people must develop in order to understand the minds of other people. We call it a theory because we can never actually connect with another's mind. There is no objective way to verify the contents of their consciousness or to assess their motivations and desires. Instead, when we interact with other people we can only guess at these things, using our TOM to work out what they know, think or feel.

    "This is Sally. Sally has a basket. This is Anne. Anne has a box. Sally has a marble. She puts the marble into her basket. Sally goes out for a walk. Anne takes the marble out of the basket, and puts it into the box. Now Sally comes back. She wants to play with her marble. Where will Sally look for her marble?" (Frith, 1989)

    Many researchers have argued that lack of TOM is the fundamental impairment at the root of autism. If a child is unable to tell what another person is looking at, they will never fully understand that they have a different view of the world. If they cannot associate this view with desire, they will never understand the motivations or intentions of others.

    FEAT BC is sponsoring the next Autism Behavioural Therapist Training Workshop at S.F.U., on Saturday, June 7, 2003.
