Great news! The Association For Science in Autism Treatment's (ASAT) free newsletter just came it today, and it contains some very well written articles. One example is a well done analysis on your odds of having a second child diagnosed with autism. This article is written by a Neuro-developmental Pediatrician. In addition, there are well-done book reviews, and a great article about a set of twins with autism who are running the NY Marathon!!! There is also a focus on what's happening in Kenya in terms of autism treatment! ASAT is committed to being an international organization, which is one of the reasons that I am on their board.

I would definitely check this FREE newsletter out by downloading it at:

    http://asatonline.org/pdf/fall2013.pdf

If you like the newsletter (which I think you will), it's a good idea to signup for it so that you automatically get a copy. The signup is also free.

I also wanted to mention something about ASAT that may be of interest to you. There is a large number of Canadians involved in this international organization. Although many of the folks live in the Eastern US, this organization truly has an international focus. In fact, the co-editor of the newsletter lives in Manitoba!

    Check it out!

Association for Science in Autism Treatment

ASAT is a not-for-profit organization of parents and professionals committed to improving the education, treatment, and care of people with autism. Since autism was first identified, there has been a long history of failed treatments and fads, levied on vulnerable individuals as well as on their families. From the scandal of the “refrigerator mother” theory, to the ongoing parade of “miracle cures” and “magical breakthroughs,” history has been dominated by improbable theories about causation and treatments.

Many of these treatments have been too quickly adopted by professionals, too readily sensationalized by the media, and too hastily embraced by hopeful consumers – well before supporting evidence or reasonable probability existed for their effectiveness or safety.

Since ASAT was established in 1998, it has been their goal to work toward adopting higher standards of accountability for the care, education and treatment of all individuals with autism.

Dr. Sabrina Freeman, founder of Families for Early Autism Treatment is a Board Member of this organization.

The FEAT BC Discussion Group has been designed to discuss any topic relevant to home-based A.B.A. programs (including Government funding and school issues). When we use the term A.B.A., we mean discrete-trial-based interventions, also referred to as "Applied Behaviour Analysis" or "Lovaas-type" Intensive Behavioural Treatment for autism and related disorders. This is not an appropriate forum to discuss or ask questions about the latest, unscientific 'cure of the day.'

I'm looking for a BCBA Behavioural Consultant in South Surrey that uses Pivotal Response Training, Natural Environment Teaching, some Verbal Behaviour with using Discrete Trials.
I have looked on the RASP list but few write what they specifically use within their ABA Intervention program.

    Thank you so much!

    Dear Families,
My name is Jodie Wickens. I am the parent facilitator for the Tri-Cities ABA neighbourhood network. I have an 8 year old son in the Coquitlam school district, who lives with autism. I am writing you today for a very specific request, we need help!
You may or may not know that we are lobbying for SD 43 to adopt an ABA support worker program in Coquitlam, similar to what exists in Surrey. We have been told by the district that this program is in direct opposition to SD 43’s philosophies. We have a district here that is putting bandages on single family experiences and ignoring the needs of a large group.
There are no guarantees under the current system, for my child, or anyone’s. The ABA SW program would ensure that my child would pull out of a pool of SEA’s that have specific and supervised training in ABA. These SEA’s would more likely to be invested in using the principles and understand how to use these principals under the guidance of our Behaviour Consultants.
Right now, we need parents willing to talk about their experiences; willing to go public. We have a school district that is stating that they are the most inclusive and have the best graduation rates. We parents are liars!
Please think about sharing your story if you have one and joining us on this journey.
I thank you in Advanced! A fellow loving parent, Jodie Wickens jbtwickens@gmail.com and the Tri-Cities ABA support Network!

    Hi All:-)

I am working on a project for school which will also be a project for the ABA support network website. I want to compile stories of "why we do ABA." So many people have misconceptions of ABA and there are way too many junk science testimonials! Please help me out and put a short story behind all of our hard work:-)
