This presentation walks you through a parents journey from receiving an autism diagnosis and taking on the huge task of evaluating autism services, service providers and setting up an individualized, evidence based treatment program. If you have a new diagnosis, are wondering about your current situation or just want to learn more and network with other parents this presentation has information for you.
2-4pm Parent Advocacy Building a Strong Community for Your Child and For the Future
This presentation includes a review and discussion about the history of autism and funding in BC. We will talk about some important legal precedents both autism services and supports both at home and at school. We will also present a roadmap of the education system in BC and provide important information to help parents understand their rights and their childrens rights in the public education system, and steps parents can take in order to secure services for their children in school.
This is a FREE event. We do require registration in order to secure a spot for these presentations, and also to help us plan for space, materials and refreshments.

About the speakers:
Louise Witt, is a parent, community advocate and Director of the ABA Support Network. She has also participated on the Board of Directors for the Autism Society of BC and the Autism Education Society and is a member of the Steering Committee for the Pacific Autism Family Centre.
Michele Shilvock is a Behaviour Consultant who has worked in the field of autism for over 15 years and brings with her a wealth of knowledge and a passion for wanting to work with others. She is very dedicated to the training of individuals in the community and continues to work with families and school teams to assist in the facilitation of team oriented working relationships. Michele works closely with children in the home and school settings, working collaboratively with families and community members.
The ABA Support Network is a non-profit organisation that is run by parents. Our mission is to improve access to quality support and treatment in the home and in the community for children, youth and adults with autism.

my current goals for my son are to prepare him for school !
increasing his communication skills, compliance, self help skills like washing hands, zipping his coat, wiping his own bum. appropriate boundaries and academic skills. Burnaby Special Presentation Sibling Issues

Kathryn Theroux will present on sibling issues when one child has Autism Spectrum Disorder. She will review what the research says about the needs of siblings of children with ASD and suggest some practical strategies for ways parents can support their typically developing children. The presentation will include lots of time to share stories, ask questions, and discuss strategies with the presenter and other parents. Other caregivers are welcome to attend!
Kathryn Theroux is a board-certified behavior analyst, registered clinical counsellor, and associate of ABLE Developmental Clinic, Inc. She is also co-director of Summer Social, a summer program for children with social deficits, and an instructor in Surrey College's ABA Support Worker program. She has served children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families in BC for nearly ten years.

Behavioural Interventionist Training Workshop
Two-day training workshop on the implementation of behavioural autism treatment at Surrey College October 18th and 19th.Autism Society of British Columbia (ASBC) is sponsoring a two-day workshop on the basics and intermediate level of Applied Behavioural Analysis training. The first day will cover introductory topics including general information on autism, behavioural theory and discrete trial training as well as the practical aspects of delivering effective behavioural autism treatment. The second day will cover intermediate level topics and will provide more in depth information on behavioural theory with a focus on practical aspects of delivering effective behavioural treatment.

Introductory workshop will include basic terminology and theory of ABA, with a focus on:

Basics of behaviour functions
The importance of and key issues in using reinforcement
