Courtney completed her Masters of Science in Applied Behavior Analysis from St. Cloud State University in 2011 and became a Board Certified Behavior Analyst in 2013. Courtney has been working with individuals with autism and other behavioural challenges, ages 2-22, for over 14 years, and has had the opportunity to provide consultation to individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury, Tourette’s Disorder, Anxiety, and ADHD. Courtney enjoys applying the principles of behavior analysis to her two young children. In addition to consulting to her own clients, Courtney has a passion for swimming and currently consults to many of her colleagues clients, designing individually-tailored swim programs, and providing training to home-team staff to implement the program.

TOPIC:

This discussion will focus on teaching swimming skills to children with autism. These skills can be taught even to children with great challenges, including those who are non-verbal or have minimal verbal skills. We will talk about how to help them learn by breaking down the physical skills into the smallest teachable components.

March 30th – Special Presentation : Do You Have Questions About Your iPad?
Creekside Community Centre, 1 Athlete’s Way, Vancouver, 7-9pm

Do you have questions about your iPad?

Can we stop apps from being deleted? Should we use a password? What happens if you loose or break your device? How can we browse safely on the internet? Can we disable the home or volume button? What apps can we use for visual strategies like schedules, choice making, social stories and step by step instructions?

These and other questions will be answered with step by step demonstrations so that the iPad can be customized to best meet your child’s needs and learning goals. Feel free to bring your iPad or iPhone to follow along.

Amanda Raichelle is a technology consultant and trainer with iEmpowerU, a company she co-founded in 2012. Her background includes Early Childhood Education, Special Education and Applied Behavior Analysis – supporting children and adults in school, home and community. Amanda has a unique understanding as she grew up with a sister with developmental disabilities and is also foster parent to a child on the spectrum. Her goal with iEmpowerU is to empower individuals, families, educators and supporters so that technology can be a powerful tool to help our children in all areas of their lives.

Introductory and Intermediate Behavioural Interventionist Training Workshop

Two-day training workshop on the implementation of behavioural autism treatment at Surrey College on March 14th and 15th.

Autism Society of British Columbia (ASBC) is sponsoring a two-day workshop on the basics and intermediate level of Applied Behavioural Analysis training. The first day will cover introductory topics including general information on autism, behavioural theory and discrete trial training as well as the practical aspects of delivering effective behavioural autism treatment. The second day will cover intermediate level topics and will provide more in depth information on behavioural theory with a focus on practical aspects of delivering effective behavioural treatment.

February 18th – Taxes and Autism – A Special Presentation

Dave Taylor is the parent of a child with autism and has been running a home based ABA program for 8 years.

Dave has done extensive research into the financial side of managing an ABA team and has gathered information on all kinds of issues from his own experiences and from feedback from other parents.

Some of the topics that Dave will cover during this meeting are:

• The *new* Family Care Giver Amount tax credit
• Disability Tax Credit
• Medical Expenses
• Federal tax credits and tips for tax time
