December 31, 2009 at 6:05 am #5711Carmen ChanMemberHappy New Year everyone,
I have an urgent request. My 5 years old son who has autism goes to kindergarten from
9:00am-12:00pm Monday-Friday. I need someone to pick him up from school by car, drop him off home, and feed him lunch till the BI arrived.
It's around one and a half hour every day. Please provide information if you know someone can do this. I will be really appreciate it.December 26, 2009 at 5:12 am #5712David ChanMemberMerry X'mas and happy holidays to all.
thanks Joanne, nice to see others posting and seeing the torch being passed. This kind of torch passing I like, unlike the olympic one.
All the best
Dave
Mr. P's DadDecember 26, 2009 at 12:43 am #5713Joanna NgMemberI was involved in this area of Consultants, BIs/ABA tutors for several months now. Needless to say, life is tiring enough with a kid with special needs. What's more if you also need to handle a group of people…working with your kid.
What I would especially like to share here is the consultant/consulting agency that we work with. Maybe some of us still have vivid memories when we first met them.
I have wasted some time because we were not on the right track, so I hope my sharing will help some others not to waste any of theirs.
Having the 1st consultation is very important. If it's free of charge, great. If not, first try out those who does not charge you. Why do we need to pay for them to advertise/sell their services? Even the banks don't.
Then, make sure you have your kid around when the consultant is there. There is a huge difference between my 1st and current consultant.
The 1st one came to blah-blah-blah about her education background, experience and fees schedule. She did not even bother to look at my toddler, a preschooler.
My current consultant, she played with him, and was able to engage him in hide-and-seek, and make him call her name. He hardly does. So, which would you choose?
And after we've made our choice, when you have questions, ask. Before that, I wrote a family goal for my child, his pluses and minuses. I got involved a lot, and I knew I had to.
I remember when I started to question something, my previous consultant said, "If you chose me, you should trust me."
Here's the dilemma. We should trust the people we chose, but we also need to trust ourself because we know our child best. And every child is different.
