June 16, 2010 at 10:55 pm #7068Joanna NgMemberDear FEAT readers,
This is an invitation for all parents in the Burnaby area to meet up. We are a group of parents who would like to know and help one another in dealing and working better with the school board. This is the only effective way to help our children get the aide they need in school in the light of government cutbacks, school boards/staffs who are not open [yet does literally nothing to help the kids]; non-transparent and denies the support[yet grabs the funding].
Surrey has come this far and excels in having ABA support in the school. Can you imagine? It's just an imagination/ideal dream for parents like us but is already happening in Surrey. This does not happen without huge, endless effort from parents like Nancy.
Let us come together [despite our busy, tight schedule] and make Burnaby another good example for our kids in school.
Meeting:
Date: Saturday June 19th
Time: 6:30-8pm
Venue: Metrotown Mall, Food Court [upper level] close to the Bay
Near the fireplace. Please forward this message to any parents/families you know who lives in the Burnaby area.
Hope to see everyone there.
If you can't make it, you can still email me and join the group.
June 11, 2010 at 5:25 pm #7069Kathy TrotterMemberHi Seanon,
Have you tried contacting Planned Lifetime Advocacy Network (PLAN)? Also, there is a lawyer named Halldor Bjarnason who may be of assistance. He specializes in trust law, but has helped me with disability benefits issues that I faced with my brother.
Hope this helps.

TO: Seanon Jones-Kirsebom (Joneskirsebom)Hello, I am a BI and consultant and I have also worked locally as a Mental Health Worker and have some experience in referrals and liaison activities; I was just wondering in which community you require assistance?
Good luck,

ASc, BFA, MA(candidate)June 9, 2010 at 5:23 pm #7072Seanon Jones-KirsebomMemberHello, on behalf of another family, I'm looking for some advice.
An adult,(referred to as Dave),diagnosed with aspbergers, has been having considerable difficulty receiving disability payment.
Dave has, on occasion, worked, and was recently let go of yet another job. Since this time, Dave has been unable to find another job. He has been denied his disability funds because he has worked in the past. He has been informed that he will have to be re-diagnosed if he wishes to collect. Also, he has applied for temporary welfare assistance, but this is taking so much time.
Dave has no case worker, and sees a new person each time he has ministry contact. Then, the new person goes through all his documents……again. Anyway, Dave is getting no further, and is frustrated.
Does anyone know of an agency or person who can advocate for someone like Dave?
Any other advice on how to effectively deal with this situation would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Seanon
June 8, 2010 at 2:51 pm #7073Joanna NgMemberTo parents who'll be attending tonight's workshop,
I wonder if anyone can kindly give me a ride to the nearest skytrain station tonight after the ABA workshop in Surrey [Dr. Glen Davies "News From the Field" Presented by the ABA Support Network 7-9pm].
Thank you.
June 7, 2010 at 6:40 am #7074Dione CostanzoParticipantDr. Glen Davies "News From the Field" Presented by the ABA Support Network
At our June 8 meeting, Dr. Glen Davies, Director of ABLE Developmental Clinic, will present on 2 important new developments in the field and leave time open for general questions and answers.
1. NAC National Standards Report
2. Pacific Autism Family Center
3. Questions and Answers
1. National Standards Report:
The National Autism Center is a not-for-profit center for autism in the United States committed to evidence-based practice. In September 2009 the NAC published their exhaustive review of the treatment literature for children with autism spectrum disorder. This review relied on the expertise of nearly 100 respected researchers in the field of autism, including Gina Green and Tristan Smith, and reviewed more than 7000 studies including over 1000 for detailed analysis. They rated studies on pre-established criteria of scientific merit and described the level of evidence for each of the common and not so common treatments for ASD, classifying them into the categories of: Established Treatments, Emerging Treatments and Unestablished Treatments. See how ABA compares to other approaches. Find out what level of evidence there is for ABA (and other treatments) for children of different ages, diagnostic classifications, specific skills increased, and behaviors decreased.
2. Pacific Autism Family Center:
Two years ago Premier Campbell announced the creation of a center of excellence in autism in British Columbia and committed $20 million. Another $14 million has been committed by private individuals to make this center a reality. Dr. Davies has been participating on an advisory group and as an invitee for discussion of specific topics. He will discuss the rationale for the center, progress towards building the structure, progress towards operational development, and an idea of potential benefits and risks.
3. Questions and Answers:
Dr. Davies would be pleased to respond to questions regarding the Autism Standards, Pacific Autism Family Center, or any other topics of interest.Date: June 8, 2010
