Celebration of Life for Dr. Ivar Lovaas
Save the Date – September 23, 2010 7-9pm
Lovaas, a distinguished professor of psychology at UCLA, a pioneer in the research and development of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy to treat children with autism, and the founder of the Lovaas Institute (http://www.lovaas.com), died on August 2nd at age 83.
Parents and professionals in BC will gather on this special evening to pay tribute to Dr Lovaas and review the history of his work and ABA as a treatment for autism.
Hear from the parents who founded FEAT of BC, brought ABA treatment into this province and continue to fight for universal access to science based treatment for all individuals who need it. Thanks to litigation by parents in the past we are able to access funding for autism services today.
Share your own story about what Lovaas and ABA has done for you and your family.
Topic: Celebration of Life for Dr. Ivar Lovaas
Guest Speakers:
Dr. Glen Davies, Director of ABLE Developmental Clinic
Dr. Sabrina Freeman, Parent and Founding Director of FEAT-BC
Jean Lewis, Parent and Founding Director of FEAT-BC
Location: Surrey Sport and Leisure Arena – Meeting Room #2
August 13, 2010 at 2:47 am #7056Stacey ParsonMemberHi,
I'm hoping for some feedback and help. I have been pricing out the Boardmaker program for my son. He is 3.5 with very basic language skills and his ABA therapy uses pecs. I have been so disorganized with using them in the household (beyond his therapy) and need to remedy this. Can anyone suggest the best (cheapest) place to get Boardmaker or maybe there's another method for pecs that I haven't thought of yet? Please reply to jsparson(at)telus(dot)netThanks for your help!

Dear FEATers,
I was away from my computer for a few days to come back to read such sad news. Barbara, thank you for your posting. I also met Dr. Lovaas briefly in 1999 and witnessed his and his wife's, Nina, dedication to their work. Since the very first consultation over 12 years ago, I could list multiple stepping stones that our daughter has reached (from learning to read, write, and speak to controlling self-injurious behaviours)thanks to Dr. Lovaas' tremendous contribution in the field of autism. I cannot imagine what my family's life would have been without his help.
My thanks forever,Franca

August 3, 2010 at 11:06 pm #7059Barbara RodriguesParticipantI received this post today. It is extremely sad to hear that Dr. Lovaas has passed away. I had the great privilage of attending one of his conferences in LA way back in 1998 and got to meet the wonderful man. He created such change for our kids -it is a very sad day indeed.
Dear friends,
I've been so honored to be on this list for over 15 years. I'm thinking that many of you have not heard this news and it is with a heavy heart I tell you… A dear mentor of mine who worked with and for Dr. Lovaas for years called me today and told me he passed away yesterday evening. In tears, she asked me to write the Me List and other lists and let you know.
For our part, Dr. Lovaas and his work with the children saved our son's life. We saw a difference in our child almost immediately when we started our home program. We are profoundly and forever grateful for his vision of something better for our children, always working faithfully toward their best possible outcome.
I met Dr. Lovaas once in Dallas, having the pleasure of sitting down to tea or coffee or some such. I was struck by his passion for excellence and by his passion for the children. I saw him speak so many times I lost count. He had such a high bar of expectation for our children and such compassion for us, the parents. I loved to hear him speak just to be energized by the humor, love and sincere desire to never stop working for our children.
We offer our prayers and condolences to his dear family, colleagues, and friends and we too grieve this loss.
love to you all, kat lee

We are wondering if there are some templates (excel) out there to download that help track behaviour, prompts, and goals. Something like a progress chart where a therapist can check off appropriate boxes every day to chart progress.

July 29, 2010 at 2:01 am #7063Nick AllanMemberGood Evening,
I was hoping to get some referrals for a Speech Pathologist and an Occupational Therapist. These therapists should know how to follow the behaviour plan set out by our Consultant. The problem that we have been having is that the SLP and OT that we have had experience with, come to the house and as soon as our child exhibits any type of behaviour (escaping behaviour to avoid the task at hand) the therapists say, "oh well that's all for today", or "looks tired to me".
If anyone could give us a couple of names of noted SLPs or OTs that you have had success with, please, please let us know. We are looking for an SLP that can help us with information on setting up social/play groups or knows of any play groups to join. Does anyone know/have experience with any structured social play groups? It doesn't matter where the person is located as long as we can get some quality therpay we are willing to drive anywhere. We are willing to go on a waitlist if need be.
While I'm begging, can anyone recommend a private 1:1 swimming teacher and a gymnastics coach. We have tried various facilities, but unless the person has some grasp of ABA, it has proven to be a challenge. Please help us if you can. We thank you in advance for any information!
