(co-facilitators for ASBC Richmond Group)October 26, 2010 at 3:38 am #7017Janet ToyeParticipantMy son is currently attending a school in the Vancouver School District. I have just learned that the new VSB protocol states that behaviour consultants who attend IEP meetings may not make recommendations. They may only attend IEP meetings to learn information for home programs. Does anyone know whether this is legal? Does this protocol go against what was gained in Hewko vs. Abbotsford School District?
Please email me at jftoye@hotmail.com if you have any relevant information concerning this topic. Thanks
October 23, 2010 at 9:29 pm #7018Heather LeyMemberI'm interested in doing voluntary work with autistic children and have experience from the UK but don't know how things work over here. Can anyone help / advise please?
I have recently arrived in Canada from the UK where I worked for about 10 years, initially as a volunteer and then as a paid Teaching Assistant at a school for autistic children. I am also the parent of a young man with autism so have over 20 years experience of autism and the associated behaviours.
I have a work permit but am more interested in voluntary work with autistic children. I have been trained in TEACCH and PECS and positive handling strategies (Team Teach). In addition, I have done support work on a one to one basis for a couple of families with autistic children.
I was obviously fully CRB checked for working with children in the UK and have references from the UK school where I worked but have not initiated any equivalent CRB checks in Canada as yet. I live in the West End of Vancouver and don't have a car so would not want to travel too far.
I can be contacted by email on heather.ley@ntlworld.com
Thanks in advance for your help.

Autism Society of B.C.October 19, 2010 at 10:39 pm #7020J.GrahamParticipantI just thought that I would pass this along.
I had my taxes done this year (yes I'm very late) through Ability Tax Group.
They were recommended to me by PLAN.I have had others do my taxes and either the cost of having the taxes done
was unaffordable or the lack of knowledge of the ins and outs of Disability
Claims was not adequate. This year it cost me $100 to get my taxes done and I'm getting back a great
refund.
Thanks Vasco!Jen

Just wanted to encourage all who can to attend this.
We have been running an ABA program for my son for about 12 years and were initially (and rightly so, based on our previous experience) skeptical about the value of OT.
However, we availed ourselves of Jessica's services for the better part of 2 years and couldn't recommend her more highly – she truly is awesome at what she does and has a firm grasp on ABA as well as OT.
My son made some real, measurable and relevant progress due to her interventions and involvement in my son's program.
Thanks, Jessica!
