Thank you to Dr Sara White and everyone that came out last night for her presentation "Prevention of Maltreatment". It is a difficult topic but one we need to discuss and learn how to reduce the risks.

Sara's research shows that familial stress is a major factor in the abuse of disabled individuals, and that parent to parent support can reduce that stress.

Check our website for a list of our Neighborhood Networks and contact the organizer in your area for information on meeting dates.

We need to network and support each other!

If you would like an electronic version of the handout from last night's presentation, please email dione@abasupportnetwork.com

    Thanks

    Hello

I am on Vancouver Island near Port Alberni and am looking for a SLP. I have not been able to find anyone.

My son is 8 years old and "high functioning". We need help as he is getting frustrated with his speech and that he sometimes can't be understood. He needs help learning to say certain letters I think. An SLP has been recommended but we can't find one taking on clients.

    Hi FEATers,

We're looking for a new Speech path to work with our 8 year old daughter. She's fairly high-functioning, but we're having trouble with a lot of things including: intelligibility, drooling, and breath support. Currently, the person we are working with doesn't motivate her as well as they could, and is charging us way too much for services. They are obviously in it too much for the money, and not enough for our daughter. I'm feeling a little pushed-around, and taken advantage of, and would love to find someone more intuitive and easier to deal with.

    We're located in Vancouver.

You can e-mail me at scissorhappy@shaw.ca

    Thanks So Much,
    {Cathy}

    TOPIC:

Building learner cooperation and motivation in intensive behaviour intervention programs is critical for the acquisition of new skills and concepts. Having an in-depth understanding of the components required to teach learner cooperation and motivation, how to problem solve when motivation decreases, how to train staff effectively, and how to design measurement systems is imperative for the implementation of effective intervention programs. This workshop is designed to examine six core concepts for effectively establishing cooperative learning skills. Participants will partake in group discussions and video analysis in order to develop an understanding of the six core concepts: motivation, reinforcement and schedules of reinforcement, preference assessment, token economies, and refusals to cooperate.

    This is a sad story.

    B.C. man banished from hometown

    http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/story/2011/01/12/bc-nelson-banish.html

The head of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association says the courts have to do a better job of handling mentally ill criminals after a man was banished from his hometown.
