In a perfect world, Mr. P would be a sophomore at Standford, looking at what Silicon Valley company he wants to intern at and getting the letter of reference from his summer employer. Sadly, reality bites…, but may be it doesn't bite as much as I thought.
This morning our son spent some time with his grandparents, and great uncle from out of town. My dad is 80, he is notorious for not turning on his phone, so when I finished my errands, I was suppose to contact them to see about lunch.
As lunch time grew near, I sent a text to Mr. P's phone, we messaged back and forth at least 5 of 6 exchanges, I knew exactly where they were, where we were going to meet, whether they had arrived already. It was all so terribly regular.
Please remember, this young man, as a child, as most of you long time readers know has NEVER been without a therapist since the age of 5, so texting in a sensible, useful way completely independently ( he asked my dad where they were on the road) is absolutely HUGH. No not a sophomore at Standford, but a darn functional young adult, pretty cool methinks.
And on that note, we are still looking for a learning work situation for Mr. P. He reads and writes, uses a computer keyboard well, and a nicer kid you will not find. Had to put it out there.
It's been a long road, and of course, we are far from arriving, but it's stuff like today that gives us that little push to try yet a little harder.
As we like to say, ABA all the way….
fight the good fight people
Mr. P's Dad
P.S. if you've got a job for Mr. P, you know how to find us.

We are pleased to have a video presentation by Dr Tony Attwood on Exploring Feelings: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy to Manage Anxiety, Sadness, and Anger in our upcoming ASBC Burnaby Support Group meeting:
Date: Friday, September 28, 2012
Time: 10am to 12noon
Venue: Autism Society of BC, #303-3701 East Hastings, BurnabySpeaker in video presentation: Dr Tony Attwood
Dr Tony Attwood is a world-renowned psychologist. He first became interested in autism spectrum disorder in 1971. Over the intervening years he has gained experience of the full range of the spectrum, from babies to the elderly, and from those whose abilities and behaviours are profoundly affected to those who are highly able, such as university professors. Later Dr Attwood became interested in Asperger's syndrome and in the recent decade has written more on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Theory of Mind, Special Interests and relationships where one partner has Asperger's syndrome. Dr Attwood was married to Sarah in 1977. They have three children, Rosie (who got married in 2004), William and Caroline, and currently live in Brisbane, Australia.
Topic: Exploring Feelings: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy to Manage Anxiety, Sadness, and Anger
If you have difficulty understanding what you and those around you are feeling, as people with autism and Aspergers Syndrome often does, the world can be a confusing and frustrating place. Misinterpretation of social and physical events can result in feelings of anxiety, sadness, and anger. In this intriguing presentation, world-renowned psychologist Dr Tony Attwood teaches caregivers how to implement cognitive behavior therapy. This therapy works from the inside out. With a logical understanding of emotional triggers and responses (in themselves and in others), people can learn to recognize and control their emotions.
Dr Attwood offers important advice on:
-Assessing emotional needs
-Avoiding and correcting misinterpretation of emotion
-Building self-esteem and improving self-awareness
-Managing anxiety, depression, and anger
-Defining and discussing physical, social, sensory and other tools, and how to use these tools from the Tool Box to manage emotions.Coffee/tea and snack will be provided. Donation is much appreciated.
Please RSVP to shui@autismbc.ca ASAP as space is limited.

JennSeptember 11, 2012 at 1:43 am #6621Mike & JeanParticipantMedicare for Autism Now! has just released Episode 6 of "Medicare's Orphans" web-series featuring experienced advocate and friend to many on this board, Laurie Guerra. She is a parent, advocate and director of the Autism Society of BC. In her 15 minute interview, she describes the impact of delays in diagnosis and lack of accurate treatment information. Her main messages to parents are not to be complacent about funding, it could be gone with a stroke of a pen and how advocacy is essential until treatment is universally accessible.
Go to: http://www.medicareforautismnow.org to watch the web-series and the full documentary, "Medicare's Orphans" Forward, share etc. with others
If you would like to know more about "Medicare's Orphans" and about those who produced and participated in this documentary including, Laurie, contact your local autism parent group and request this be an agenda item at a monthly meeting. Based on availability, we would be happy to discuss the documentary and its purposes.

Vision Investment Properties will be hosting a charity fundraiser for the Autism Society of BC on Saturday, September 8th.
We are partnering with the Luxury Supercar Weekend Autoshow (http://www.luxurysupercar.com) and will be giving autistic children the chance to ride in Fisker supercars between 2pm-5pm (http://www.fiskerautomotive.com). The cars are eco-friendly super sports cars that can seat up to 5 people. They also happen to be extremely rare and a treat for car enthusiasts! This charity event will be a fun, once-in-a-lifetime experience for the children and a great way to raise funds and awareness for the cause.
The event will be held at the VanDusen Botanical Garden in Vancouver and it will be a good time for the entire family. There are only 10 spots remaining, please contact antony@viproperties.com to register and reserve a spot.
