Subject: Welcome Home Rachel Russell
It is with great pleasure that FEAT of BC welcomes home Rachel Russell.
Rachel will be joining ABLE Development Clininc as a Behavioral Consultant starting the week of Nov. 13th, 2001
For those of you who have not had the opportunity to know or work with Rachel, let me tell you a little bit about her.
She has spent the past 13 months working with the New Jersey Institue of Early Intervention (now the LOVAAS Institute of Early Intervention – LIFE East Coast office) in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. While there Rachel completed all the necessary training to qualify as a Behavioral Consultant in Applied Behavioral Analysis. She worked with a wide variety of children of different ages and levels.
Rachel has a BA in Psychology (1996) from UBC and a MA in Educational Psychology and Special Education majoring in Human Learning, Development and Instruction also from UBC (2000).
Prior to going to New Jersey to complete here training as a Behavioural Consultant, Rachel was a LOVAAS-style ABA senior therapist in home programe for six years in BC. She worked with a variety of LOVAAS style Behavioural Consultants in home programs during that time.
Rachel also co-designed and presented the very popular and successful one day Behavioral Therapist Workshops which focused on discrete trial training techniques for junior therapists working in home programs.
I have only briefly outlined Rachel's academic and ABA work experience history. Her CV lists many impressive achievements.
Our son had the great fortune and benefit of Rachel's skills, creativity, energy and ENTHUSIASIM before she went to the US, so I am confident I speak on behalf of all her previous BC families when I say BC is extremely fortunate to have her back!
Rachel can be contacted after Nov. 13th at ABLE Development Clinic at 604-584-3540.
Once again – Welcome home Rachel and best wishes for continued success!

Director – FEAT of BCOctober 24, 2001 at 10:56 pm #5965Peggy BoonMemberWell, well ,well. I must say I've read with great interest, the posts from the last several days. When one lives in a proverbial glass house whose mandate is not solely Lovaas ABA treatment one should consider carefully the act of advising others on the logistics of setting their stones in motion.

October 10, 2001 at 4:00 am #5962Pam MihicMemberLinda Cucek was interviewed by the Vancouver Sun regarding the 'broken promises' of the Liberal government in her quest for funding for Lovaas – based ABA therapy for her 17 year old son James. Linda was promised by Gordon Campbell during the election campaign that James' therapy would be funded if the Liberals were elected. The article and photograph should be published in Thursday or Friday's paper (Oct. 11/12). If you have any questions or feedback for Linda, she can be contacted at 604-936-3635 or cucek@home.com. Her computer is temporarily down so it may take a few days before she gets back to you.
October 5, 2001 at 4:07 pm #5961Barbara RodriguesParticipantHi Everyone:
I just wanted to let everyone who was going to the workshop at SFU on Saturday that FEAT will be selling 'cards'. As you know, FEAT has no membership fees and accepts no funding from the Government – so this is one way we have in order to raise funds for the many good works that FEAT does, such as the great 'parent packages, the Broken Promises brief, the CIAT program, and much much more.
I urge everyone that comes to the workshop to buy a packet of these cards and in essence support FEAT of BC.
The cards are painted by various artists (children with autism) and are blank inside. They have lots of colours and the envelopes are brightly coloured and come in different colours. They make great 'thank you' cards to send to those people that help or make a difference in your child's life. The packets also make great gifts to give to therapists, friends and family. On the back of each is a small saying about autism and the child who painted the picture on the card. The cost is 20.00 per packet of cards.
So again, I urge everyone to come over and buy a pack of these great cards. They're very nice and you're supporting a great cause.
Thanks.
Barbara Rodrigues

In the interest of achieving government endorsement of individual funding for intensive ABA treatment. I am asking everyone to request information from their local school districts on the incidence of autism in the student population (focussing on grades 1 through 6). My intent is to use this information to demonstrate to govt. the tragic cost of opposing individual funding.
In our School District 47, Powell River, for the year 2000-20001 we had 1257 students enrolled grades 1-6, 10 diagnosed autism/PDD.
2 more Autism + other disease. Undisclosed number of children undiagnosed but likely in the spectrum.Incidence of diagnosed children: 1 in every 101 children.Rate of recovery or independant functioning to date for anyone 16 or over diagnosed with autism/PDD in our community 0.
The majority of families whose children are diagnosed autism/PDD and are now teenagers are putting their children into group/foster homes.
A rocket scientist is not needed to figure out that individual funding for "effective" treatment for "all" children diagnosed would save the taxpayers of this province huge sums of money.
If you can get those figures please email me at thujalog@home.com or fax 604 487 0038 0r phone 604 487 0038. Should be available from the school district or a ministry supported child care consultant.
As October is Autism awareness month consider encouraging your local community newspaper to publish how great a problem this is for your community.
Just a reminder that autism related services are under a review and a contentious issue right now and that any action on your part will contribute to making a difference.
Feel free to contact me if you have questions or concerns.
Sincerely, Alex Barclay -
