March 7, 2002 at 6:23 pm #4340FEAT BC AdminKeymasterFollowing up on the recent enquiry posted to the discussion board regarding Facilitated Communication, this note is to remind members that the FEAT BC Discussion Board is not a general autism board or list. As such, it is not an appropriate forum to discuss Facilitated Communication or other unsubstantiated intervention protocols. For information on Facilitated Communication, we highly recommend members obtain a copy of the New York State Department of Health Clinical Guidelines for autism, available locally from Kids Tools, Ph. 604-924-5437
We encourage those unfamiliar with the discussion board rules to please visit http://www.featbc.org/chat/messages/21/21.html.
Discussion board rule number four states:
4) The FEAT BC Discussion Group has been designed to discuss any topic relevant to home-based A.B.A. programs (including Government funding and school issues). When we use the term A.B.A., we mean discrete-trial-based interventions (also referred to as "applied behaviour analysis" or "Lovaas" behavioural treatment) for autism and related disorders. This is not an appropriate forum to discuss the latest, unscientific cure of the day. If you would like to discuss alternative options, please go to the AUTISM MAIL LIST.
The autism mail list is an open e-mail based forum to discuss autism hosted by St. Johns University, and administered by Bob Zenhausern and Ray Kopp. It includes parents, autistic people, researchers, professionals, students, and other people interested in autism. Discussion is lively: many weeks see 500 or more postings. It is a very good forum for posing a question for which you do not know who would have the answer. To subscribe, send an e-mail to: listserv@MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU. Leave the subject line blank and in the body type SUBSCRIBE AUTISM [firstname lastname].
Thank you.
Board Admin.March 7, 2002 at 8:22 am #4339Deleted UserMemberI was just wondering if anyone had any experience with FC (facilitated communication)?
(if this has already been discussed, where would I find the posts on it?)
Thanks!
March 6, 2002 at 7:04 pm #4338Deleted UserMemberLots of laughs over all of the toilet stories!
An update on our predicament: My husband took the toilet off a THIRD time. Couldn't figure out what was blocking it after hours of poking with the auger… and so he took it into our backyard and smashed it with a sledgehammer. Told me it felt good however he was a bit disappointed that it instantly smashed into smithereens because he had been hoping to whale on it for a few minutes.
and do you know what my little turkey stuffed in there? A hairspray bottle. Full size hair spray bottle! who knew such an item could fit?!
WE ended up with eye hook type locks up high on the door and the children have to ask us to open the door when they need to go.
On aside, we know have eye hook locks on every single door in our house. You've got to wonder what visitors think?!
Michelle
p.s. thanks for all the ideas everyone!

(Julia's mom)March 4, 2002 at 7:01 am #4336Jenny ObandoMemberOn a happier note. We just moved which has been a little hard on our son, but it sure change the other day when he was out side playing on the deck, when I heard the kid next door ask my son:What's your name? , I stop breathing in anticipation of his response , since we have been trying to teach him his name for about 3 months, then I heard this voice : Tristen, Tristen Worobey . I jump higher than when Canada won the gold in hockey.
Keep up the good work , and don't give up!
Jenny (Praud mom of Tristen,Tristen Worobey)March 2, 2002 at 2:15 am #4335Deleted UserMemberHello everyone,
We are Alex and Sasha from Vancouver, Canada. Our two-years old son, Andrew, has recently been diagnosed with autism. Although we have put his name on the waitlist for a few ABA providers in BC, we can't afford their service at the moment.
We know that ABA services are paid by the government in other provinces, so we are considering to move to Ontario or Alberta in order to get a treatment for our son. We would appreciate contact information of families who had an experience of moving to another province and getting ABA service there, or simply any information that could be helpful in our case.
Thank you in advance.
Best regards,
Alex and Sasha
