To Anonymous re Picture Cards:
Kids Tools has a great set of picture cards that can be used over and over again for a variety of different programs (a great investment!). Only problem is that they cost about $250 (including shipping and applicable taxes).
The address to get those picture cards:http://www.education@kidstools.com
They are called "Stages Learning Materials Language Builder Picture Cards"
Phone: 604-924-5437I hope this helps,

September 1, 2002 at 10:11 pm #4600domasMemberHello,
I completely understand and agree with you Mrs. Rodrigues.
Just a follow up comment to my earlier post. My name was taken from an application form I printed off the FEAT Manitoba website. I sent it in to become a Friend of FEAT Manitoba so that I could receive their newsletter and get a feel for the local scene. I did not expect or request any endoresment from the organization for work, JUST INFORMATION about ABA organizations, and I received that in a very timely and helpful manner. I appologize for the confusion, and again, I would never try to mislead anyone and I have the highest respect for FEAT's position and their dedication to their children.thank-you
kirstenSeptember 1, 2002 at 8:06 pm #4599Barbara RodriguesParticipantHi Everyone:
Because unfortunately there are no regulations for anyone to call themselves 'behavior consultants' – it is often up to the parents to offer their opinions as to how 'good' or 'how qualified' a particular consultant is. Of course consultant's may give family names as references but sometimes there may be families that did not have such a wonderful story to tell hence it is great opportunity to ask about the 'consultant' over the chat site. Parents must protect their children and especially a group of children (if you are going to vouch for said consultant) by ideally getting all the information besides just the 'academics and resume'. This is done all the time on the other lists and seems to be a good way to ensure the person's character and capability. It is not usually to harm the consultant but instead to make sure that you are good and how you are with other families that you have worked for. Since it is the other families who are responding it does not breech any privacy acts that I know of. Same as if someone asks me who my doctor is and how I liked him. How Jeremy's dentist is and who is he. It doesn't concern his/her credentials but how is this person with my son relating to my own experiences and thoughts. It doesn't mean the person asking is questioning my doctor's education just how I felt that they are. Parents are realizing that behavior analysis is a powerful tool and we need to make sure that if we are allowing you access to our children and their future that you are who you say you are. It is not to discredit you but rather to protect our most precious of gifts.
My thoughts on the subject.

I have the highest respect for FEAT of BC and all of their accomplishments. It is because of my involvement with this discussion group that I hoped that FEAT of Manitoba would also be able to provide me with info on the Lovaas ABA scene in Manitoba. I have to admit that after your helpful email and phone call I was surprised to see my name posted here. My partner and I are very uncertain about where we will end up living in a couple years and are inquiring about several places. I realize that you are protecting the future of children with autism by carefully choosing your consultant and I wanted to assure you and all members that I have the highest respect for Lovaas Consultants and their training and that I would never try to mislead families about my qualifications. If I do in fact ever end up in Manitoba I will be happy to provide you with all the information and references that are needed.
thank-you
KirstenAugust 30, 2002 at 3:38 pm #4595Stephen SutherlandMemberDoes anyone have any experience with Kirsten Domaszewicz. She says she is a Behaviour Consultant in the Vancouver area. She is looking to move to Winnipeg in a year or two and has asked Manitoba FEAT for help finding local employment. I am willing to bend over backwards to help a legitimate consultant, but I don't want to waste my time (and the time of families and children) helping an imposter.

Website: Manitoba FEATAugust 29, 2002 at 5:40 am #4594Deleted UserMemberI have spent some time exporing the autism 2002 conference website,http://www.autism2002.org, and frankly it leaves me as jaded as ever in regards to our government. There are many contradictory statements as well as much misleading information. For example they say in one statement that 1 in 1000 people have autism. In another its 1 in 500 births. (?).
They refer to behavioual intervention in the same sentence as vitamin therapy and diet, describing them both as equally "effective interventions" for autism. Yesterday the site said there is no medical treatment available for Autism, as well as no cure.
I could go on.
Go to the site instead and read the "Did you know?" snippets on the side of the page.
I know many parents want to understand the disease of autism better but I would not endorse this site as a place to look for unbiased information. I hope the conference is more objective. To provide contrast parents may want to look to organizations like the Association for Science in Autism Treatment, http://www.asatonline.org who publish regular newsletters and disseminate information which is science based, objective, and just plain useful to parents who are serious about getting down to the business of implementing science based behavioural treatment for their children.Recently a government bureaucrat responsible for a large group of special needs children stated to me in a conversation (on the subject); "I understand it doesn't matter what you do in the way of an intervention for autistic kids as long as its intensive". As if any size fits all..
Knowledge and truth are the best tools of advocacy. We better all get better at using them.
