What a beautiful post. I too am in tears. Happy Birthday to your little girl, Ariel. May her journey continue forward with great joy and promise.
Your wonderful words remind me that when we thank those that have helped – we tend to forget that it is you that was behind/the author of the many powerful FEAT newsbriefs and you that helped write or condense some of FEAT's most powerful words in this long fight for our children.
Happy Birthday to your little angel. Thank you for sharing your gift of words with us to not only inspire and bring hope but also to empower our children's stories and their plight to the public.

September 26, 2003 at 5:51 pm #6321Deleted UserMemberThank you Avery and others for sharing your success stories. As a mother with a recently diagnosed child, it's so (very) exciting to hear other children's milestones. I know there are a lot of baby steps along the way, but I love to hear how other children are progressing. It gives me hope for my 2 year old.
I would love to hear more of how other children are succeeding in their programs.
I think it is also nice of you to acknowledge those who have given you so much help along the way. I think people sometimes don't realize how much they do for us.
Thanks again.September 26, 2003 at 5:00 pm #6320Monika LangeMemberHi Avery, I was so happy to read your post this morning. My ten year old son's story is the same as your daughter's. He was once very severely autistic, but thanks to Sabrina's good advice and financial help from my parents, he was able to have a few years of Lovaas ABA – and now he is a happy popular boy who has quite a bit of language, loves other kids, is a great swimmer and bikerider. No longer does he spin continuously in circles. No longer does he scream and throw countless ugly temper tantrums every day. No longer does he scream and repel from people who try to interact with him. No longer does his brother (just a year older) cry because he thinks his little brother hates him. Seven years ago FEAT gave me the best advice of my life, "There are a lot of touted 'therapies' out there; your child only has one chance at early intervention so look for the scientifically proven one." Thank you Sabrina. Up north where I live, it's lonely here in terms of ABA supporters. This chatboard keeps me in tune with parents (like Avery) who understand the bittersweet uphill journey we and our children have had. Besides my parents, who have walked uphill with me, no one else here really 'gets' it. No one else really understands the love we have for treatment that has helped our children so much, and our deep appreciation for those at FEAT who guided us to it. I'm happy for your family, Avery. Thanks for your heartwarming story.

Reading your post made me cry as well. Congrats and best wishes to you and Maureen on Ariel's birthday and achieving all those milestones. She is so fortunate to have you both as her parents! You both are amazing people and so is your little girl.
Best wishes
RobinSeptember 26, 2003 at 2:42 pm #6318Michelle WeisMemberWell Avery,
You got me tears. You helped remind me of where we came from years ago and the way things are now. (remember our first consultant?!) This whole experience we embarked on 6 years ago has helped me to feel blessed that we have such a powerful organization that CAN move mountains when we stick together.
Bradley turned 10 in August as well. (actually when we were in BC for a visit) He met up with old friends, we went go carting and had a blast. He too blew out his own candles and was singing happy birthday with his friends.
What a life we lead with our children but I wouldn't trade it for anything. All I need here in Ontario, is a clone of Sabrina and I would be doing ok.
Be very, very blessed y'all live in the same Province with such a force as Sabrina and Jean (the dream team) because here in Ontario I have had nothing but an uphill battle for services I already had for years in BC.
I will be making a trip to Ottawa in the spring…hope to see ya there Avery.
One person I want to give kudos to is Shelley Davis. She has helped too many families to count and therapists become who they are today. SHE'S THE BEST!
Thanks again Avery, you brightened up my day!
Take care
MichelleSeptember 26, 2003 at 2:08 pm #6317Deleted UserMemberThe FEATBC office has been receiving lots of calls regarding tomorrows Therapist workshop.
Yes, we will be accepting registration at the door. We have a small number of spaces available as we have booked a larger room for this workshop than last time. Please bring a cheque payable to FEAT of BC.
Registration will start at 8:30 and will be first come first serve. We will do our best to squeeze in everyone.
See you tomorrow morning.

September 26, 2003 at 5:51 am #6315Debra AntifaevMemberAvery, you sap, you have made me cry!
I sat yesterday with a bunch of MCFD folk who were trying to tell me the Government EIBI was a good program because there was a wait list to be on it……they will never understand.
I was starting to come a little unravelled and wondering why we bother and I am so glad you have reminded me (again) of what is important.
It all seems up hill..and there are a lot of uninformed, uncaring people to climb over on the way…..thank you too, for being such a great advocate, and an all 'round great guy
