January 20, 2004 at 6:30 am #7370Deleted UserMemberHi my son has recently been diagnosed with autism we would like to set up a home based ABA program and would be greatful if anyone could give us recommendations for behavioural consultants. Most of the consultants we have contacted have lengthy waitlist. One name we were given was Suzanne Jacobsen, does anyone have experience with her. My son is 51/2 so we would like to get a program started asap. We feel we have lost valuable time as it has taken us over 2 years to finally get a diagnosis. My email address is pocokids@yahoo.ca.
Thanks
January 14, 2004 at 11:36 pm #7371Courtney MapsonMemberI have been asked to post this on behalf of a friend of mine. They are looking for a nanny for their children and have pretty much exhausted their options as none of the nanny's interviewed have been able to handle their children. Just wondering if anyone knows of a good nanny agency (who was able to provide a good nanny for an autistic child), or if anyone knows of any nannies working in the North Van. area who is looking for work.
They would also be interested in any people with experience with autistic children to babysit some evenings.
If you know of anyone or can help in any way, I can be reached at cpaigemapson@hotmail.com
If you are currently a therapist who would like to earn a little extra cash babysitting, please email me as well.
Thank you in advance for your help.January 6, 2004 at 11:40 pm #7372Kendra StewartMemberOpportunity Seeker!
My name is Kendra Stewart, and I am currently seeking the oppurtunity to put my skills to their best use. This is my first time seeking an opportunity through FEAT, and I am looking forward to helping anyone out as much as I possibly can. Children of today are, in my opinion, the brains of a better tomorrow. No matter what their situation, each individual child deserves a chance, and it is up to them brains of yesterday to give them this chance.

Thank you for your time.

Kendra StewartJanuary 3, 2004 at 8:47 am #7373Dorothy RayMemberI am responding to the anonymous posting of Jan. 2/2004 11:50 pm re: Dr. Melvin Delevie etc.
I would be delighted to provide Dr. Delevie's contact information. He gave both my sons their initial diagnoses and has been instrumental in obtaining further assessments. I'm not sure whether I should post his info. on the general board, but if you'd like I can email or phone it to yourself or your friend. You can contact me at roganddot@shaw.ca .
Also, I was told that the MCFD (Ministry of Children and Families) requires a "multidisciplinary assessment" of autism or ASD in order to proceed with funding. We had to provide the following assessment reports:
*Pediatrician (such as Dr. Delevie)
*Auditory (hearing test – can be accessed through your local health unit)
*Psychological/cognitive (we went to the ABLE clinic in Surrey, but there are many options)
*Speech/language (needs to be done by an MCFD approved speech pathologist who has access to and knows how to implement basic as well as any autism-specific speech/lang. tests)You can either get these assessments from:
*professionals acting separately (and paid for out of your own pocket and/or extended health insurance) or
*through an organization such as Surrey Memorial Hospital, Sunny Hill Hospital, or Children's Hospital (paid for in full by the government, but may have long wait lists). We had our first son assessed privately (he was four at the time and we needed to move more quickly than the hospitals allowed for), and our second son assessed at Surrey Memorial Hospital. Both experiences were good and gave us equally useful results (the wait for Surrey Memorial was actually not too long – 3.5 to 4 months from the pediatrician's examination.
If you want further information about our processes, I can provide that as well. Good luck!

roganddot@shaw.caJanuary 3, 2004 at 7:50 am #7374Deleted UserMemberHello. A relative of mine has been researching how to go about getting a diagnosis for their son who is showing signs of autism. Two questions for those who have been through this:
1)They have been told they need to recieve 4 separate diagnosis to access funding, is this true?
2)Does anyone have Dr. Melvin DeLevie's contact information?
Thanks in advance for all your help.December 23, 2003 at 3:46 am #6159Deleted UserMemberI was notified today that the FEAT of BC intermediate workshop is now full. At this time, registration is closed.
Due to high demand, we will run this intermediate workshop again and those who were not able to register for January 17th can register for the next date. We will choose this second date shortly after Christmas and will post on the FEAT Chat board at that time. The date will most likely be in February.

Exciting news! It may actually be possible to get a Masters in ABA without leaving Vancouver! The University of Nevada is prepared to offer a satellite Masters (this means that the your degree will be from the University of Nevada but you will do your coursework here in Vancouver. It is not distance ed, you will actually have classes here in Vancouver).
In order for the program to run, there will need to be at least 30 participants.
This program is a 39 credit program and provides you with the coursework necessary to write your exam for board certification.
For those interested in this satellite Masters program, there is an information night on December 17 in Burnaby. Check out the website at http://www.behavioral-solutions.com for more information
