Just a note to all those looking for a new, fun activity for their child.
I recently enrolled my autistic son in a karate program run by Stephane Fournier, held at the Mediated Learning Academy in Coquitlam.
I highly recommend this class and especially the intstructor, who is incredibly patient and gears his instruction to the child's level. Most of the kids in this particular class have special needs of some sort.
Sensei Fournier has a web site, http://www.shintokukai.com, where you can find more info. about class times and locations.
January 30, 2004 at 3:30 pm #7359Suzanne WetzelMemberHello:
I am currently posting from Ontario. We will be moving to Vancouver (Pt. Grey area) in July. My son, Sebastien, is 10 years old and has been in an ABA program supervised by Autism Partnership for the past 6.5 years. While we are well aware of how things run (or don't run) in Ontario (we are part of the ongoing court case similar to Auton), we are entering uncharted territory come this summer. I am very nervous to be giving up all therapists, consultant, school system and financial support at once. I have a series of questions and would greatly appreciate any assistance:
1/ how do I go about securing any form of government funding for both at home support and school support? I think we'll need to do this from here, as most deadlines are in March.
2/ Does anyone have suggestions for consultants available in Vancouver who work with older children in the school system?
I'll leave it at that for now. Thanks in advance for any help!

Workshop Session: Getting the Most from your Teach Me Language Language and Concept Acquisition Reference Guide
Teach Me Language really zeros in on the areas of difficulty which our children with Autism and related disorders are up against. Once a child has some basic vocabulary and can answer simple "what" and "where" questions, this book should be in your hands! Activities in this book are practical with children from kindergarten through the teenage years.Teach Me Language is a comprehensive guide to the higher levels of language and concept acquisition. This book outlines in a concise, matter of fact, jam-packed format ideas, solutions, templates, drills and games to get your child talking, thinking, writing and analyzing in a fluid way and should be a part of any bonafide ABA program.
But theres so much in there the question is How and When to effectively use and apply this manual.
In this special presentation, open to parents and professionals, Dr. Freeman will walk us through sections, games and templates explaining ideas and applications behind each.
Bring your own Teach Me Language manual ($74.95) and Exercise Form Companion ($26.95) to follow along, or they can be purchased at the door (cheques or exact cash accepted).
We sincerely hope you can join us for this special event.
We will help you slay your giant!

January 28, 2004 at 4:47 pm #7361Deleted UserMemberHi to the person who responded to my post about my son's "baffling" speech problems. I was so happy to read your post!!! Thank you so much for responding. It does sound like our boys are similar and that you have found some effective programs. I would love to speak with you. My e-mail address is katzalay@hotmail.com
Once again, thank you so much. You're the first person I've encountered with a similar issue. It's such a relief.
January 28, 2004 at 5:55 am #7362Deleted UserMemberHi there. In response to the person who posted about the five year old boy with "baffling" speech problems, I have to say that your little boy sounds alot like ours. Although his "quantitative" scoring on receptive and expressive language are about 50th percentile for his age group (a very dramatic improvement over the last year and a half where he used to be at about the 15th percentile) he continues to have "pragmatic" difficulties like the ones you describe. We have had a combination of social skills programs (re the orientation of the listener) and many different language based programs focussed on what our consultant calls "generative language". (ie, our son also struggles to find the words or the ideas even though he understands them and can repeat them without difficulty). This has been an area we have struggled with and recently our consultant has given us some really good ideas for prompting in these different programs which have allowed our son to make some great progress. Finaly, we've had several programs over the years introducing and practicing different carrier phrases to help initiate speech. All of this has been really nicely supplemented by our speech therapist who independantly initiates the same type of strategies. If you want more info, post an address at which I can contact you and I'd be happy to share consultant names and speech therapist names.
January 27, 2004 at 7:59 pm #7363Tej & Margaret MinhasMemberI am interested in finding a mother who has a similar child to ours so that we can exchange information i.e. therapy, speech, biologicial issues, etc. Our son is 5.5 years old, is verbal, with no speech, low muscle tone, not attending school yet (although preschool). He is also in a ABA program.
I would also like to hear from other mothers who are actively involving themselves in their child's therapy program, and doing the program therapy.
Please contact me at tejminhas@telus.net
January 27, 2004 at 5:56 pm #7364Deleted UserMemberI'm trying to find a family whose child has a similar speech issue to mine, since he seems to baffle everyone including his very talented speech pathologist and ABA consultant.
He is 5 years old, high functioning and very talkative. However, his delivery is very often very confused and wordy. It is almost impossible for someone who doesn't already know what he is talking about to make any sense of it. He uses long phrases, rephrases himself sometimes, and sometimes uses nouns incorrectly. He doesn't orient the listener. Finally, he has difficulty with word retrieval although his short term memory seems to me to be quite strong.
I would love to know if anyone has a similar problem or has any suggestions with respect to where to go for information/answers.
