Dear Nancy,
It is wonderful for your son to start talking! And you are absolutely right, that it does not really matter, what was the main reason for his to start talking. I also witnessed many wonderful results with regards of the Lovaas treatment as well as Greenspan.
Speaking of Lovaas, his approach was very advanced at one point of time and he also had a hard time to move his ideas around.
Please, understand me, I am not in any way discarding wonderful skills and knowledge earned over the years. I am only suggesting that it could be another way, which is not based on the child's age and Autism severity level. Also speaking of the data collected over the years – the Option Institute and their Son-Rise program cured hundreds, if not thousands of children and adults with different deficiencies. The Son-Rise is mainly concentrates on Autism treatment.
Also based on one of your remarks, that I joined a wrong discussion group, I checked the site again and found that you are absolutely right. So, please, accept my apologies for interfering with the discussion.
Truly with love, Uri.April 19, 2004 at 5:21 pm #7309Nancy WaltonParticipantSorry Iouri,
You are on the wrong chat board. Feel free to post on the Autism Society of BC Chat board as it is not limited to autism treatment that is backed by science research. There you will find all the other treatments with wonderful "claims".
Who is to say what your child would have done with or without therapy. Many autistic children talk later than typical children.
My own child has been in ABA therapy since he was two and didn't start talking until he was 4. At the time, I was reintroducing wheat into his diet. Was it the wheat that made him talk??? Should I go out there and tell all parents to go wheat free and then reintroduce wheat at the age of 4 because that is what worked for my child?
As for the son-rise web page, that is a web page. Not a peer reviewed article from a reputable journal. Anyone can make a web page. Anyone can make claims. But only Lovaas has done research and that research has been replicated. So that is where the feat chat board keeps their focus.

I posted a message about Son-Rise program as not an argument to ABA or any other wonderful therapies, but as an opportunity for other parents to know about other alternatives. We, like other parents, were searching for a cure for our son for at least 2 years. We already tried an ABA in multiple variations as well as a Greenspan approach with very insignificant results. With Son-Rise we found great results.
As of "Son-Rise has no scientific evidence backing it":
1. I do not care about scientific evidences if it helps;
2. The Son-Rise program actually cured thousands of children and adults with "not-curable deficiencies". Check the http://www.son-rise.org/ for details and references;
3. I was a Medical Doctor and believed it or not a lot of "true" medical solutions, which were supported by scientific evidences were "true" yesterdays and no longer a "true" today. You can ask any MD (as well as psychologist), how many times the view about disease as well as treatments have changed during the length of their medical practice. So, going further: what is considered to be a true today, might not be a true tomorrow. NOTE: the scientific evidences backing these true might not be considered as a scientific tomorrow. It is just a little philosophical opinion.
4. The "root" of the Autism is not discovered yet or agreed upon yet. There are theories only. How we can talk about scientific therapeutic solutions if the source of the disease is un-known?April 19, 2004 at 4:26 pm #7311Iouri KroukovMemberDear Stephen,

has no scientific evidence backing it. I also was under the
impression this was not even data driven. If there is any science
behind this program, I'd like to hear it. Forgive me, sir, but your
anecdotal report of your child's progress doesn't help me if you
can't prove scientifically that it's because of this program or
yours.April 19, 2004 at 10:11 am #7313Iouri KroukovMemberWe discovered a wonderful approach from the Option Institute. They have a Son-Rise program, which is under the Option umbrella. The Son-Rise program is a child-centric and parent-driven. The main idea of this program is loving and accepting attitude, where we are joining (where possible) the child's behavior and building a new one, when the contact is established. As a result of this approach our non-talking son spoke over 50 words and 2-words sentences over the period of less then 2 months. We achieved 100% contact and his violent behaviors almost disappeared. Need more details, call Uri at 416-888-6528 or write to ikroukov@sprint.ca. In Toronto I will be more them willing to help setting up this program.

April 3, 2004 at 5:48 am #7317Nancy WaltonParticipantThe Surrey/Delta/Langley ASBC community group is meeting Thursday, April 8th, 7-9pm at the Semiahmoo House Society. The address is 15306 24th Ave, South Surrey.
This week we will be having a general discussion, so I'd like to limit the meeting to parents and friends only. From 7-8:30 we will each share our concerns or ideas with the group, then from 8:30 – 9 (or 10ish), we will break off into smaller groups to meet up with people in similar situations, or to ask questions of veteran autism parents. This is an excellent opportunity to meet other parents and to find out about treatments or how to start up an ABA program.
To get to Semiahmoo House Society from the north or west of the lower mainland, get on to 152nd Street going south (either off #1 or off #99), go south to 24th Ave and turn left, then turn right on 153rd. It's a beautiful two story building. Parking in front or back.
If you're coming from the East (Langley) come west on 24th Ave and then park accross the street at the London Drugs (can't turn left on 24th Ave). OR, come west on 32nd Ave to 152nd Street, then go south (left), then turn left on 24th, and right on 153rd.
