August 25, 2004 at 3:27 am #7260Laurie GuerraParticipantTony,
I assume the Sunday school you send you child too is a Christian one????? How ironic that the one place that is supposed to be accepting and non-judgmental to all can be just the opposite. I too send my autisic son to church. My husband and I attend the adult service and our kids attend what they call "children's church". The whole thing is geared for the kids; music teaching; fun; food! We have been atttending the same church since my son was a baby so in all fairness to your church you might need to forfeit your time (or find a teenage boy) to attend with your son at first. Church's are just made up of the people that attend so hopefully you'll have as much grace for them as you want them to have for your child. I attend a church in Surrey called Victory Christian Center where there are a number of autistic children. Most of the parent's have at one time or another gone into the classes with their children as class helpers or teachers themselves. Once the other teachers and kids get to know your son they won't be so standoff-ish and will learn what works best for your son.
Just my two cents……

August 23, 2004 at 11:16 pm #7262Super DadParticipantDoes anyone know an autism-friendly sunday school? I shed a few tears yesterday when my son and I were kicked out of the classroom. He couldn't stop crying after a little girl's scream frightened him. (I don't blame the very young teacher, but I was very unhappy thinking of the discrimination we will face in the future.)

August 11, 2004 at 10:45 pm #7265Nancy WaltonParticipantMy son has been doing ABA since he turned 2 years old. While he did not recover, he just finished a successful year integrated in Kindergarten with a full time aide. During the year, he kept coming home with little "gotcha" awards (for demonstrating good behavior). I thought the teacher was just being extra nice since he is autistic.
But then, last week, he came home from day camp with an award for having the best sportsmanship in his group at day camp!! They noted his willingness to try all the activities no matter how difficult.
I am a proud parent today because, 4 years ago, I was told about ABA therapy. I want to thank Sabrina for bringing awareness of this science based treatment for autistic children to BC. And I want to thank Sabrina and Jean for their support and encouragement and wisdom as I struggled to start an ABA team and get my sons therapy paid for. I want to thank all of the Auton group for fighting for funding for this treatment. It is thanks to each one of you that my family has suffered less financially, and that my husband and I can be proud of our son.

Arbutus Coast is presenting another great workshop! This time it is in Victoria and Bridget Taylor will be the speaker. This is a great opportunity for us and I hope everyone can get a chance to attend. It will be a great workshop for both parents and also therapists. See you there!
Arbutus Coast Presentations, Inc. Proudly Presents .
Dr. Bridget Taylor
Victoria British Columbia
Friday, 22 October, 2004Dr. Taylor will present two talks.
Morning Session
Improving the Verbal and Social Behavior of Children with Autism: A Focus on Acquisition and Motivation
Existing research has documented the efficacy of a wide range of interventions to facilitate language and social responses in children with autism (e.g., incidental teaching, video modeling, script fading, audio-tape prompts, contrived establishing operations). Many children, however, continually fail to initiate these responses on their own despite directed teaching. Acquisition, generalization and maintenance of social responses may occur more readily with specific attention to variables that effect motivation. This presentation will review a range of research-based strategies for addressing the verbal and social responses of children with autism, with specific attention to variables that may enhance motivation and response allocation. Videotaped examples will be used to illustrate both teaching procedures and the skills to target. Examples will include children with autism who have both vocal ability and those who utilize voice output communication systems.
The talk will focus on the following Learning Objectives:
· Research based strategies to facilitate the verbal behavior and social behavior of children with autism
· Relevant skills to target given childs skill profile
· Variables that impact motivation
· Strategies to contrive establishing operations to promote language
· Strategies to contrive establishing operations to promote social behavior
· The variables that effect response allocation
· The variables to consider when prioritizing objectives and considering interventions
Afternoon Session
Recognizing, Dealing with & Preventing Problem Behaviours
Children with autism can present with challenging behavior. For example, it is not uncommon for an individual with autism to engage in high rates of repetitive non-purposeful behavior, tantrum in the presence of demands, or engage in aggression or self injury when denied access to preferred activities. The presentation of problem behavior can significantly interfere with and limit educational and social opportunities, negatively impact family functioning, and if not addressed can limit overall community integration experiences. This talk will provide an overview of the potential reasons why problem behavior exists, innovative interventions that match treatment to function, and practical strategies parents and teachers can implement to prevent the development of problem behavior. Case examples will be presented through lecture and videotapes to illustrate assessment, intervention and data-base outcomes.
The talk will focus on the following Learning Objectives:
· The potential functions of problem behavior
· Environmental contexts that may occasion problem behavior
· Skill deficits that may occasion problem behavior
· Assessment procedures to match treatment to the function of problem behavior
· Potential treatment options given the function of the behavior
