    Hi everyone,

I am also going to the Bridget Taylor workshop this coming Friday Oct 22.

I have the same request as Joan, who posted earlier: I plan to catch the 7pm ferry from Victoria back to Vancouver. I am wondering if someone can give me a ride from UVic to the ferry terminal. I am willing to share gas/ ferry cost…

    Thanks!

    Hi everyone,
Would it be possible for me to get a ride back from UVic to the ferry terminal on Friday? I'm hoping to catch the 7pm ferry, and we could share the gas/ferry cost.

Please email me at jabroto@alumni.sfu.ca if we could carpool.
    Thanks so much!

Attention all parents the next F.E.A.T. of B.C. discussion group will be on Monday, November 15th at 7:30 p.m. This month we will have a guest speaker: Sharon Baxter, MA,BCBA
    Behavioural Consultant

We are extremely fortunate to have Ms. Baxter as a quest. Many of you know of Sharon's excellent work in the field of A.B.A. Her presentation will be on behaviour using the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis. Topics will include the ABC's of behaviour – the antecedent, behaviour, and consequence; functions of behaviour, and the use of positive reinforcement and other behavioural tactics to produce behaviour change.

This presentation was made to the ASBC's Surrey/White Rock parent group and was extremely well received.

The Presentation starts at 7:30 p.m. and concludes at 9:00 p.m.

The meeting is at St.Francis-in-the-wood Anglican Church in West Vancouver. Download a map from this website for directions.

This meeting is open to parents, therapists, consultants or anyone else who works with a child in a Lovaas A.B.A. program.

Admission is by donation. Please e-mail jean.lewis@telus.net to reserve a seat.

    See you on Nov. 15th.

Registration is filling quickly for both the basic and intermediate workshops in Victoria. Please avoid disappointment by mailing your registration soon if you plan to attend.

The registration form for the basic therapist workshop can be found at:

    https://www.featbc.org/downloads/abtw.pdf

Registration for the Intermediate workshop can be found at

    https://www.featbc.org/downloads/ibtw.pdf

    *********************************************
The basic workshop will take place on November 6 from 9:00 – 5:00. Through seminar instruction as well as hands on practice with peers, participants will learn about Discrete Trial Instruction ABA both in theory and in practice. This workshop is recommended for those who want to start or who have already begun working in this field as well as teachers and EA's who work with or want to work with children with Autism, as well as parents, SLP's, OT's. For those with experience, this workshop serves as an excellent refresher.

The intermediate workshop will take place the following day from 9-5. This workshop is restricted to those with experience in the field. Parents are of course welcomed as well. All attendees must have taken a basic training workshop through FEAT or through a qualified Behavioral Consultant. In order to register you must list your experience level as well as where you have taken your basic workshop.

Please note that the intermediate workshop fills quickly. Space is limited due to a high amount of hands on practice with individualized feedback from the workshop instructors.

    Hey all,

We are back from Outdoor Ed. The entire grade seven class
went to the Westcoast wilderness lodge for 4 days and 3 nights
    of Outdoor education.

I was one of the parent supervisors.

Before we left I had serious reservations about being away for
that long with Mr. P. Cuz the place is totally unfamiliar, and
pretty much everything we will be doing would be NEW.

But Hey, no guts, no glory , right!

Off we went on the Charter bus all 39 kids and parents and
teachers off to Egmont on the Sunshine Coast.

There were out door activities galore. And like building a shelter,
kayaking, hiking, Archery, and a ropes course (this is where you
balance on ropes, have your teamates help you through the
    course)

Well low and behold, Mr. P did all of the activities with a
minimum of fuss. No whining, Ok, a little whining, he wanted to
sing some of HIS songs at the campfire, but we decide it would
be best that he just sang along with the others.

Mr. P had a great time and learned a few new skills. I asked him
what his favorite activity was the wire bridge on the ropes
course, and when asked Why he liked it, he answered, it was
because he could do it "ALL BY MYSELF".

I think it's kind of telling, in that I think he is starting to feel the
need to be independent. I can't think that is a bad thing.

What I also learned, is that when a child has been properly
integrated into his class, there was never a question of whether
he was going to participate, it was a matter How he was going to
    participate.

When he was ready to go up, to tell a joke, one of his friends
went up with him. When we were on the ferry, I ask one of the
boys to 'hang out" with Mr. P , and that was not a problem. They
didn't ditch him, just hung out.

I think what it tells me is that children in general are very
excepting, and helpful when they have been introduced to it
    properly.

The other thing that I observed is when I spoke to the teachers
about this particular grade 7 class, which was so pro-social. All
of them said the same thing to me, "May be it was Mr. P that
brings out the good in the other kids" I never really thought
    about it that way

When you have child that has needs that are greater than the
norm. The message given by all the adult experts and
professionals is that you will have to give them extra. Its rarely
mentioned that "The Child" will make a valuable contribution to
    us as well.

I always get a little anxious when there is a new situation that
Mr. P has to deal with. More often than not, the outcome, is as
good or better than us parental units anticipate.

For now at least, our family has made another step. And who
knows what will be next, but sometime, I think these small
victories will help us continue our journey.

Well that's all for now from our camp.
Everyone, keep up the all the good work.

    Dave,
    Mr. P's dad

P.S. What are we thinking, giving this kid a Bow and Arrow, but
hey, he actually hit the target, what do ya know ?

….just as an aside…what are you still doing up at midnight?!!

    Hi Janet,
when I click on the link, the registration form for November 13th came up.

There are numerous links on this page including workshops by other leaders so it is a bit confusing.

    Look for the words
"FEAT BC Therapist workshop at Douglas College"
    and click on
    "download registration form here"

and the correct form will pop up.

For the workshops again, I see forms for Jan 2003, and 2 for Victoria workshops. Should we just use a form from the January one?

Thanks for the heads up Robin, you are right that is the Victoria form. I checked the board again and the proper link says "Download Registration form here"

    1. go to https://www.featbc.org/downloads

    2. click on "download registration form here"

    Sorry for the confusion everyone!

    Hi Michelle,

When I do the download, I get the application for the Victoria workshop. I am assuming this was a "boo boo," Looking forward to getting the vancouver application.

    Thanks, Robin
