Parents,service providers, and therapists:
In case you didn't know, here's some important information….
It is highly unprofessional conduct to poach therapists off other people's ABA teams. It is really not acceptable to approach therapists who are clearly working with an individual in the community, school or elsewhere – and interrupt them, ask personal questions – then offer them a job on your team! It is both unethical and unprofessional. Also, using my name or saying you know me in order to entice potential recuits is as unethical as it is offensive.There are many ethical ways to recruit for therapists. Please ensure that you or those who are recruiting on your behalf are acting professionally.
Parents – Please discuss confidentialty expectations with your ABA therapists and Behavioural Consultants to ensure they are properly prepared to protect your child's confidentiality and safety in the community.

I've got a question about how to best "save" money for a child with Autism in BC. I am lucky enough to have discovered a distant relative who would like to contribute some money for my daughter's future and I'm trying to figure out the most beneficial, and sound way to do this.
Please email me with any advice on where to start looking, who to contact, or how to proceed, and thanks VERY VERY VERY VERY much in advance.

I have a question… one more time, for you all.
Due to a complicated return, and audit, from 2010, I haven't (gulp) paid taxes for four years and REALLY need some help getting them done. It would be great if you could send me the name and contact info for an trustworthy accountant who understands the ins and outs out Autism. Someone in Vancouver, would be great, but I'm willing, certainly to travel to find someone competent. You can email me at:
Thanks so much in advance.
Hope things are well as can be for everyone…{Me}

An officer of the West Vancouver Police Department has graciously volunteered his time to answer questions and address potential concerns.
TOPIC:
Despite our best efforts, inadvertent violation (or perceived violation) of the law is possible for many of our sons and daughters regardless of age. There have been cases where the police have been called to North Shore schools in response to behavioural issues. There have also been cases where local children over 18 have been charged with criminal offences. In other cities, clashes between autistic behaviours and armed policemen have resulted in tragedies. This meeting is an opportunity for parents to discuss ways to prevent run-ins with the law, and what to do if it happens.

(Co-facilitators for ASBC North Shore Group)June 9, 2014 at 7:54 pm #6441Stella LiParticipantThis summer, Harmony House is pleased to announce that we will be offering a summer camp for children 9-12 years of age, which focuses on generalization of skills in the community. This program will be offered on Fridays from 10am-3pm six times over the months of July and August. This specialized group is specifically designed to encourage generalization and skill development in the community, while building upon friendships. Each Friday a different outing will be planned around the lower mainland to hone into the childrens interests, and also providing opportunities to new experiences. Participants can be signed-up for the outings that work within their summer schedules and are of interest. To maintain an individualized and safe curriculum, spaces are limited to provide a high ratio of facilitation per child.
Goals for the summer program within the community:
* Increase social thinking and self management in the community
* Demonstrate and practice socially appropriate behaviours
* Engage in reciprocal social interactions
* Teach accountability
* Generalize flexibility within group interactions in the community
* Opportunity to practice organizational skills in unstructured environmentsDrop-off and pick-up will be at the location of the community outing.
As this is a unique camp that promotes the generalization of a variety of skills, there is a certain level of independence and prerequisites that is required for each participant. Part of the registration process requires a one-time fee of $50 for an in home student assessment to ensure goodness of fit.
Registration for these outings will be a first come, first serve basis. Registration and payment is due June 27, 2014.
For more information regarding dates, outings and costs please contact Joanne Ma at joanne.t.ma@gmail.com
